After clinching the NL West title, the Dodgers lost five of six during the final week of the season, costing them a shot at home-field advantage in this series. That could be important because they went 53-28 at home and 38-43 on the road this season. ... The Dodgers outscored the Nats 26-21 in the season series, including a three-game sweep at home. ... Scherzer did not face the Dodgers this season. ... One key to the series could be how the Nationals starting pitchers other than Scherzer do, particularly Gonzalez, who struggled much of the year but gets to face a Dodgers lineup that does not fare well against lefties. ... The architect of the Dodgers, Stan Kasten, helped build the Nationals from a 100-loss team to a playoff participant while he was their president. ... Nationals manager Dusty Baker played for the Dodgers from 1976-82; his first base coach, Davey Lopes, was a teammate in Los Angeles.---Big Picture:Dodgers: With a $234 million opening day payroll, highest in the majors, Los Angeles (91-71) reached the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year in Dave Roberts first season as manager. The Dodgers have won four straight NL West titles, a first for the storied franchise, and surpassed 90 wins for the fourth season in a row. But they are still looking for their first trip to the World Series since Kirk Gibson, Orel Hershiser & Co. won it all as big underdogs in 1988. Los Angeles was beaten in the NLCS three times from 2008-13, then lost in the NLDS each of the past two years. ... Roberts and Tom Lasorda (1977) are the only rookie managers to lead the club to a division title. ... Gonzalez had 90 RBI for the 10th consecutive season, becoming the only major leaguer to do so. ... Grandal, Seager, Justin Turner and Pederson gave the Dodgers four players with 25 or more home runs for the fourth time in franchise history and first since 1997. ... The Dodgers put 28 players on the disabled list this season, the most for any team since at least 1987. ... Roberts used a franchise record-tying 55 players, including 31 pitchers. ... Seagers 193 hits were the most by a big league rookie since 2001. ... Dodgers pitchers recorded 1,510 strikeouts, a major league record.Nationals: Washington (95-67) won the NL East for the third time in five years, each time with a different manager -- in 2016, with Baker in his first year with the team; in 2014, with Matt Williams; in 2012, with Davey Johnson. But the team has yet to win a playoff series, losing the NLDS to St. Louis four years ago, then San Francisco two years ago. This time, Washington led nearly wire-to-wire, briefly sitting in second place in early May before taking over first in the division for good and never really being challenged. The strength of the team most of the way was its starting rotation, anchored by Scherzer, a strong contender to add an NL Cy Young Award to the 2013 AL honor he won for Detroit. But the teams top pitcher for the first half of the season was Stephen Strasburg, who finished the year on the disabled list and is unavailable for the NLDS. GM Mike Rizzo, who famously shut down the right-hander before the 2012 playoffs to protect his surgically repaired arm, says its possible Strasburg could pitch if the Nationals advance. There are big questions about the lineup right now because of some injury concerns. Coming off his unanimous selection as 2015 NL MVP, Harper took a step back. He missed four games late with a sore left thumb, then went 1 for 11 with 8 Ks in the last three games of the regular season. Murphy hasnt started since Sept. 17 because of a strained glute muscle and its not clear how healthy hell be against Los Angeles. All-Star catcher Wilson Ramos is done for the season after tearing up his right knee in September. After all sorts of bullpen problems in the teams previous two trips to the playoffs, Rizzo added Melancon at the trade deadline.---Watch For:- Ace In The Hole. As sensational as Kershaw has been throughout his career, hes struggled in the postseason. The three-time Cy Young Award winner and 2014 NL MVP is 2-6 with a 4.59 ERA in seven playoff series since 2008. He was 1-1 with a 2.63 ERA against the Mets in last years NLDS, which the Dodgers lost in five games. It remains to be seen if they would start him on three days rest in a potential Game 4 against the Nats. Kershaw missed more than two months with a back injury before returning in September. While he was out, the Dodgers surged into first place past slumping San Francisco.- Young Star. Trea Turner added energy, elite speed and some surprising pop to the Nationals lineup when he became a fixture in the leadoff spot during the summer. Hes only 23 and inexperienced, yes -- just 347 major league at-bats -- and is learning a new position (center field) on the fly after being a middle infielder. But he might be Washingtons biggest threat on offense at the moment. DeMarcus Cousins Jersey . The third-ranked Ivanovic, who won the event in 2008 and 10, served five aces and broke Wickmayer, also a former winner in 2009, five times. "The result looked easier than it really was," Ivanovic said. Jacob Evans Jersey . "No difference at all," chirped U.S. roommate and linemate James van Riemsdyk. "Its still the same cranky Phil. http://www.cheapwarriorsjerseysauthentic.com/ . Halifax beat the Saint John Sea Dogs 7-5 on the strength of two goals apiece from Nikolaj Ehlers, Matt Murphy and Brent Andrews. Jonathan Drouin also scored and had three assists while Zachary Fucale made 17 saves for the Mooseheads (16-8-0), who led 6-1 after two periods. San Diego State is about to do something it hasnt done in 21 years -- play a game as a ranked program. The No. 19 Aztecs went 341 polls without being ranked before cracking the rankings Sept. 18 and aim not to stumble when they visit South Alabama in Mobile, Ala., on Saturday (8 p.m. ET, ESPNews).San Diego State didnt remain ranked very long back in 1995. The Aztecs fell out as quickly as they climbed in by losing 34-31 to Wyoming. But San Diego State, which didnt play last week, is back among the elite and intends to hang around a lot longer this time around. It feels great to just be able to get the recognition we felt we deserved, standout senior running back Donnel Pumphrey said. Our team, we expected it. Were all happy and were ready for the next test -- which is South Alabama.Oh yeah, South Alabama. This San Diego State squad should have plenty of motivation when it comes to avoiding the upset. You see, the Jaguars (2-2) defeated the Aztecs 34-27 in overtime last season in San Diego.San Diego State players and coaches sure dont need much reminding of that defeat.Anytime somebody beats you, you relish the chance to return the favor, Aztecs coach Rocky Long said. My idea that last years game was two teams of similar playing ability was exactly wrong. They outplayed us bad. You have to give them credit.South Alabama senior outside linebacker Roman Buchanan is interested in making it consecutive wins over the Aztecs. He also expects to confront an angry group of San Diego State players.Theyre definitely gunning for us, Buchanan said. I would expect nothing less than that. Theyre a really good team, and they dont take lightly somebody coming into their house and beating them. So they definitely want to return the favor. The Aztecs (3-0) are streaking as they enter the rematch. They have won their past 13 games -- second best in the nation behind top-ranked Alabama (16) -- and have won 11 of those by 14 or more points.Another victory would give the program its first 4-0 start since 1981.Not only is San Diego State gaining rare national attention, Pumphrey leads the nation in rushing yards per game (199.7) and is receiving mention as a possible top-fivve Heisman Trophy finisher.ddddddddddddumphrey recently surpassed Marshall Faulks school career rushing mark of 4,589 yards and that has elevated his status and increased his national profile. He has 4,871 rushing yards and 52 touchdowns -- including 599 yards and seven touchdowns in three games this season. The 5-foot-9, 180-pound Pumphrey is only 129 yards away from becoming the 21st player in college football history to rush for 5,000 career yards. He kind of reminds me of Reggie Bush, he is that type of back, South Alabama coach Joey Jones said in reference to the former USC star and current NFL player. He is what I call a one-step cutter, he can be running full speed and it only takes him one step to change direction at a great angle. He has the speed to take it home, if you miss him and he gets out in the open field he can score from 60, 80 yards out. Hes a guy who can make big plays.South Alabama did a capable job on Pumphrey last season. Pumphrey finished with 102 rushing yards but needed 28 carries to reach that total.Buchanan and senior safety Kalen Jackson are tied for the team tackle lead with 33. Buchanan has a team-best five tackles for losses and Jackson has 4 1/2. Senior defensive end Randy Allen has a team-leading 3 1/2 sacks.Offensively, sophomore quarterback Dallas Davis passed for 1,130 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions this season, while senior tight end Gerald Everett has 21 receptions for 290 yards and two touchdowns.Davis most memorable performance was rallying the Jaguars from a 17-point deficit to record a 21-20 victory over Mississippi State in the season opener. He tossed a game-winning 4-yard touchdown pass to Everett on fourth down with 57 seconds remaining for the decisive points.San Diego States defense is led by linebacker Calvin Munson (team-best 34 tackles) and cornerback Damontae Kazee (12 career interceptions). Senior defensive end Alex Barrett has contributed four sacks.Sophomore quarterback Christian Chapman threw for six touchdowns against two interceptions this season. ' ' '
