KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Salvador Perez picked a perfect time for his first pickoff of the season. The star catcher homered, then helped protect the lead by trapping Kyle Seager off first base in the eighth inning to lead the Kansas City Royals over the Seattle Mariners 5-3 Saturday.Perez hit a solo home run off the foul pole in the seventh that gave the Royals a two-run lead. Moments later, the World Series MVP made the defensive play of the game. With runners at the corners and one out, Perez threw down to first baseman Eric Hosmer for his 18th career pickoff. That was Hosmer, Perez said He gives me a sign and I throw the ball right to him. I think he knows more than me.In turn, Hosmer credited the catcher.Thats all him, Hosmer said. Just knowing hes behind the plate youve got to stay close to the bag at all times because hes so quick back there. The pitch takes him that way and he just throws it right back over there, just an unbelievable play and thats why Salvys the best. He changes the game, just completely took all the momentum away from them right there. First and third with one of their big hitters up, it was a huge play.Even Seager had to compliment Perez. You cant get picked off in that situation, but hes pretty special back there. But, I obviously got off too far.Edinson Volquez (8-8) gave up three runs and six hits in six innings.Kelvin Herrera pitched a perfect ninth for his first save since April 10, 2013.Wade Miley (6-6) gave up 10 hits. He left after Cheslor Cuthberts RBI single made it 4-3 in the sixth.Cuthbert also doubled and finished with two RBI.Seager hit his 18th homer, tying it at 3 in the fourth. Nelson Cruz added two hits for Seattle.TRAINERS ROOMRoyals: LHP Jason Vargas threw a simulated game and manager Ned Yost was encouraged by the progress he showed. Looked good, really good, he said. Three pitches, good changeup, fastball with life. Good breaking ball, good first step. Yost anticipates Vargas could make a return in September.ROSTER MOVEThe Cleveland Indians claimed LHP Tyler Olson off waivers from the Royals and will be sent to Triple-A Columbus. Olson was designated for assignment by the Royals on July 5.UP NEXTIn Sundays finale, former Royals draftee LHP Mike Montgomery (2-3) will get the start for the Mariners against RHP Dillion Gee (3-2). Montgomery was selected in the first round in 2008 and was part of the December 2012 trade with Tampa Bay that brought pitchers Wade Davis and James Shields to Kansas City. Probably cool for Mike, Mariners manager Scott Servais said. I know he was drafted by the Royals, was a high prospect there. The anxiety of going back and pitching against your friends, your teammates, your former teammates, but hes been away long enough now, I hope that its kind of gone away and Im sure hell give us a good effort. Carlos Rodon White Sox Jersey . -- Yogi Ferrell orchestrates pretty much everything in Indianas offence. Kelvin Herrera Jersey . McCarthy, a player who played some games in the second tier for Wigan at the start of this season, would go on to shine inside Evertons midfield, outplaying the man he was brought in to replace, on one of the grandest stages in English football. On Saturday, it was fitting that Manchester Uniteds most recent dagger into the chest was delivered by Frenchman Yohan Cabaye, a wonderfully gifted central midfielder who put on an outstanding effort for Newcastle at Old Trafford. https://www.cheapwhitesox.com/2954e-eddie-collins-jersey-white-sox.html . Miikka Kiprusoff had just announced his retirement after a decade-long run in Calgary and it would be up to Berra and Ramo to fill the void. Whos No. 1?The Associated Press began asking the most important question in sports in 1936, and 1,103 times since then the AP college football poll has provided an answer that has only led to more questions, such as: What? Why? Are you kidding? The arguments about what team is best in college football have moved from bars and taverns to Facebook and Twitter, but if you think its more heated now then back in the day, consider:Before the AP started asking its member sports writers and editors to vote for the top teams, then-sports editor Alan J. Gould in 1935 went about ranking them himself. In the final rankings he named Minnesota, Princeton and TCU co-No. 1s, and Gophers fans, as the story goes, hanged Gould in effigy. It created a storm in the Big Ten in general, said Gould, who died in 1993, recalled on the 50th anniversary, and Minneapolis-St. Paul, in particular.Gould quickly realized it was best to spread the blame, er, responsibility for the rankings around. And so its been that way ever since, with various tweaks and turns. The Top 20. The Top 10, for a little while. And since 1989, the Top 25.As college football has evolved, the polls role has changed. The Bowl Championship Series led to the College Football Playoff and at this point college footballs champion is sort of settled on the fielld.ddddddddddddThe AP still crowns a champion. But its not just about whos No. 1. Thats easy to figure out these days. Its about whos better. This team or that team? My team or your team. My conference or your conference. The media members who vote in the Top 25 are also charged with figuring out whos No. 2. And No. 6. And No. 12 and 14 and 21 and so on and so forth. Just because we can all agree on a champion now doesnt mean everything is settled. The one constant in college football over the last 80 years has been the AP poll. It has helped link the past with the present and provided perspective. With that in mind, the AP is using 80 years of poll data and a simple formula to bring you the top 100 college football programs of the poll era.To determine an all-time Top 100 for the first time, the AP counted poll appearances (one point) to mark consistency, No. 1 rankings (2 points) to acknowledge elite programs and gave a bonus for championships won (10 points). The top five teams using those criteria: Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Alabama and Southern California.Surely that will settle all the arguing.
