NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee Titans rookie running back Derrick Henry left a lasting impression in Thursdays practice. The 2015 Heisman Trophy winner took a handoff from Marcus Mariota, hit the hole, then lowered his shoulder and knocked linebacker Nate Palmer, who was trying to make the stop.Thats a real play, Titans coach Mike Mularkey said. Hes going to move the pile, whoevers in the way better get out of the way. Some of the things he did out here with some of the cuts where he broke it to the outside, he had speed to get away from some of our outside guys, which again was a real play in practice so its good to see.Thats the Derrick Henry everyone knows and expects to be part of the Titans offense this season. But the second-round pick has worked hard to show that he is more than just a cut-and-go running back.Henry aspires not only to be a threat running the football, but also catching passes and protecting quarterbacks. Being able to do more than just run between the tackles would put the rookie in a better position to stay on the field for more snaps as he backs up DeMarco Murray. With Murray expected to only see limited action in Saturdays preseason opener against the San Diego Chargers, Henry could get an extended chance to show off his skills with the first team, which means being able to handle whatever role is called. Its very important (to be a complete back), Henry said. Thats what I want to be known as. Thats why Im working hard to get better every day. I work on catching the ball, running the ball and pass protection just so I can become a complete back.Henry wasnt asked to do much receiving at Alabama, where he won the Heisman and helped the Crimson Tide win the 2015 national championship. Henry caught 11 passes last season and totaled 17 receptions in his three years at Alabama. But the Titans have shown a willingness to be more creative by splitting him out wide in certain packages.Hes done well in all the areas, Titans running backs coach Sylvester Croom said. Hes got to get better in all of them, but we havent put any limitations on him. We expect him to be good in all those areas. Hes working toward that. He hasnt put any limitations on himself. Hes been willing to learn, and he learns very fast.He has good hands. If fact, he dropped one pass in the offseason and he hasnt dropped any in camp so far.How good are Henrys receiving skills? When the Titans practiced Monday in their intra-squad scrimmage at Nissan Stadium, Henry was one of several players in line to field kickoffs in pregame warmups. He didnt drop one.Although he didnt get to show much of his versatility in college, Henry is confident he can contribute when his number is called as a pass receiver.I definitely want to be a threat in the passing game and catch the ball out of the backfield, he said.---Online: http://pro32.ap.org/poll and http://twitter.com/AP-NFLJohn Elway Jersey . His body broken but his zest for life intact, Collingwood star Dane Swan has confirmed his AFL retirement.Swans future has been up in the air since suffering a serious foot injury in Round 1 of the season, with the injury likened to the impact suffered in a car crash. The 32-year-old said he made a decision two or three weeks ago that he wouldnt be able to play on.I just couldnt trust my foot to go round any more, he said on Tuesday.I was trying to fight the decision a lot in my head. Id probably known for a while that I dont think I could play.It was right in my gut that I needed to go.They say die a hero before you live long enough to be the villain.ESPN AFL expert Jude Bolton, who went to school with Swan in Essendon, told ESPN the midfielder would go down as someone who got the most out of his time on and off the field.I went to the same school as Dane, St. Bernards College [back] when he was tat-less, Bolton said.[But] hes one of the old dinosaurs - [he] loves the other side of football, camaraderie, getting away on footy trips but when you come to the two hours of football on the weekend, he knows how to win games of football. He played in big games, he loves the contest and has an amazing ability to work.We played against each other a lot ... the Swans used to have a bad run against Collingwood and Dane was pivotal [during those games].His workrate and ability to get around the ground was huge - [he played] 258 games of quality and hell go down as one of the great players and certainly one of the great characters. In 14 AFL seasons, Swan certainly became a hero, achieving ccult status for his colourful personality.ddddddddddddHe was awarded the club best and fairest three times, was named as an All-Australian five times and won the 2011 Brownlow Medal. He said his highlight was the 2010 premiership, won in a grand final replay after their drawn decider with St Kilda.Collingwood feted his life and career at their training base on Tuesday, with past and present coaches Mick Malthouse and Nathan Buckley sharing a stage.Malthouse said he saw enough in the left-footer to draft him with pick No. 58 in 2001 even though his feet were pointing east and west and he could barely kick.(He had a) strong family background, strong football club and strong mateship, Malthouse said. The pride factor was the greatest because he was not going to let people beat him.Buckley said he told Swan shortly after he suffered the injury he wanted him to play on in 2017.We were looking forward to seeing him as a forward who came and pinch hit through the middle, he said.I reckon he could have done some real damage.(The injury) was about the only thing that was going to stop him.Swan broke three bones in his foot, including a Lisfranc fracture, in the first minutes of the Magpies season-opening clash with Sydney.Im sad to finish up, he wrote on Instagram, announcing his decision on Tuesday morning. But cant wait for the next part of my life to start to invest more time into my friends and family who have invested 15 years of there (sic) life into mine.
