CHICAGO -- Madison Bumgarner facing Jake Arrieta had an October feel to it, and the San Francisco Giants performed like they belong in the postseason.Bumgarner outpitched Arrieta with 10 strikeouts over six innings, and San Francisco pounced on rare miscues by the Chicago Cubs in a 3-2 victory on Saturday.Bumgarner (14-8) allowed two runs and five hits in his fourth victory in his last five starts. San Francisco, trying to catch Los Angeles in the NL West, rebounded from a pair of one-run losses in the first two games of the four-game set against the major league leaders. Were going up against a team that, I dont think theyve clinched yet, but theyre going to be there, Bumgarner said. And were planning on being there. So its a playoff-type of matchup. The Giants had a major league-best 57-33 record at the All-Star break. But they are just 16-29 since that point, leaving them looking up at the Dodgers and clinging to the top spot in the wild-card race.It was one we definitely wanted and needed, catcher Buster Posey said. It was good to score some runs off Arrieta and then for our bullpen to hold the lead.Arrieta (16-6) was charged with three runs -- two earned -- and four hits in six innings in his first loss since July 30. Chicago had won five in a row overall.A little bad luck, a little missed execution, Arrieta said. The Cubs had one last chance when pinch hitter Anthony Rizzo led off the ninth with a walk against Will Smith. Rizzo advanced on a sacrifice by Dexter Fowler, but the big first baseman was caught off second on the play.Thats huge, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. Heart of the order up, man on second, its a different game.Kris Bryant then hit a soft lineout to shortstop Brandon Crawford, handing Santiago Casilla his 30th save.Chicago also had an opportunity in the sixth, but Bumgarner struck out Matt Szczur for the third time with two on. Hunter Strickland got Addison Russell to line to right with the bases loaded in the seventh. The sputtering Giants had dropped three of four and eight of 12 overall.Right now as bad as it seems, were still in a better spot than we were in 2014, Bumgarner said of their last World Series title season. Weve still got the division in our sights for sure. The Cubs entered with a 16 1/2-game lead in the NL Central thanks to a number of tremendous defensive plays in the past week. But they were sloppy on a cloudless day with the wind blowing in as two of the games top pitchers squared off.Third baseman Tommy La Stellas two-out throwing error in the first made it 1-0. The Giants scored in the fourth with the help of a passed ball and added a run in the sixth on Arrietas second wild pitch. The Cubs got within 2-1 in the fifth thanks to Javier Baezs hustle. He led off with a single, stole second and scored from there when third baseman Eduardo Nunez was unable to barehand Arrietas slow roller.Angel Pagan doubled and scored on the error by La Stella, who was a late addition after Jorge Soler was scratched with an ingrown toenail. Soler hit for La Stella in the fifth and struck out with one on.The Giants took a 2-0 lead on Nunezs RBI single in a fourth that included a walk and wild pitch by Arrieta and Willson Contreras passed ball. Its not very common with our group of guys, Arrieta said of the mistakes. You dont expect to see those things often. We had opportunities regardless.TRAINERS ROOMGiants: Reliever Derek Law (elbow) hasnt begun throwing yet, but Bochy said they expect him to be at full strength when hes eligible to come off the disabled list Sept. 12.Cubs: Setup man Hector Rondon (triceps) threw a 22-pitch simulated game and felt good enough that his rehab stint at Triple-A Iowa was scrapped. Rondon could be activated Monday. Im back to normal, he said.STREAK OVERGiants 1B Brandon Belt dropped Ben Zobrists two-out popup in the first to stop the longest errorless streak in franchise history at 17 games.UP NEXTRHP Johnny Cueto (14-5, 2.98 ERA) looks to rebound from his shortest stint with the Giants when he faces Cubs RHP John Lackey (9-7, 3.41 ERA) on Sunday. From filmmaker Nanette Burstein (On the Ropes), The Price of Gold revisits the saga that rocked the figure skating world ahead of the 1994 Lillehammer Olympic Winter Games: the assault on Nancy Kerrigan, and the plot that led its way back to her rival Tonya Harding. The Week 6 NFL matchup that will take place this Sunday in Miami is a contest of two teams headed in different directions. The Dolphins are coming off an embarrassing 30-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans. Miami is 1-4 and not playing very good football on offense or defense. The Pittsburgh Steelers sit atop the AFC North at 4-1 and fly into South Florida on a two-game winning streak. Both teams have suffered key injuries to starting players. The Dolphins entered their Week 5 game against the Titans missing seven projected starters. The Steelers played the New York Jets in Week 5 down four starters and lost captain and defensive end Cam Heyward in the game because of a hamstring injury. The Dolphins backups have not stepped up while the Steelers players and head coach Mike Tomlin live by the next-man-up credo. Its the next man up, linebacker Jarvis Jones said. Coach Tomlin is really serious about it. Guys take pride when theyre the next man up.When you get that helmet you have to take full advantage of it. The guys did great this week and we got a great win together.Added linebacker Vince Williams, who led the defense in tackles for back-to-back weeks while filling in for injured inside linebacker Ryan Shazier: The standard is the standard. You know we believe in that. Thats real. Thats it. I dont know what else you want me to say. Nobody on this team believes they are a backup. Everybody just believes they are waiting for their opportunity to put their hand in the pile and help this team win football games. While the Steelers have used this motto to continue to win games, the Dolphins, with healthy players or not, continue to struggle in all phases. The offensive line without injured left tackle Brendan Albert (flu) and left guard Laremy Tunsil (ankle) gave up six sacks to the Titans. Starting right tackle JaWuan James allowed a sack against Tennessee, meaning he has allowed at least one sack in each of the last three games.James might have caught a break with the injury to Heyward. The starting left end for the Steelers will not play against the Dolphins. This is the first missed game in Heywards career and snaps his streak of 85 straight games played.Tomlins motto of next man up falls into thhe lap of backup defensive end Ricardo Mathews and a rotation from nose tackle to end by Daniel McCullers and Javon Hargrave.ddddddddddddThe Steelers defense runs a 3-4 so the linebackers will be asked to blitz more this week against a struggling Dolphins offensive line. The Dolphins released former starting right guard Billy Turner and 2015 16-game starting guard Dallas Thomas on Monday. Head coach Adam Gase knows his team needs to play better especially along the offensive line.Gase said: Were inept right now. Weve just got to figure something out. We tried to slow it down (Sunday), and huddle, and we only had 41 plays and eat up 23 minutes. Were not getting enough first downs. We had a chance there on the third-and-1, and the ball gets batted down. We think were in the end zone to be down by three and we get a holding call. It just seems that we cant get out of our own way right now.The Steelers dont share that same feeling on offense. The offensive line needs to protect quarterback Ben Roethlisberger better as indicated by the nine sacks they have allowed. But Roethlisberger is third in the NFL with 1,496 yards passing and has thrown for 15 touchdowns with only four interceptions.Where the Steelers will look to make their offensive mark on Sunday is running the football. Running back LeVeon Bell has accounted for 432 offensive yards since returning from his three-game suspension. The former Michigan State Spartan is averaging 105 yards rushing per game. The Dolphins run defense is the worst in the NFL and allows on average 150.8 yards per game. The much maligned defense without starting linebackers Koa Misi and Jelani Jenkins allowed 235 yards rushing to the Titans.Running back DeMarco Murray had 27 carries for 121 yards. We werent finishing our tackles; thatll kill you every time, especially with a running back like that, Gase said of Murray. The Dolphins have allowed two bruising style runners to gain over 120 yards against them this season. New England Patriots and former Steelers running back LeGarrette Blount was the first. Bell fits that mold as well. ' ' '
