PHILADELPHIA -- The Detroit Red Wings dont like being reminded they have not won a regular season game in Philadelphia in nearly 20 years. When you guys keep reminding us its hard not to think about it, Red Wings left winger Henrik Zetterberg said about his teams 0-11-0 record in Philadelphia since Jan. 25, 1997.But obviously, we know what it is. We havent won there in a while and we have another chance (Wednesday) and another chance next week (when the Red Wings return to Philly). We cant really focus on that. We havent been at our best the last two games and we want to get back to that. We need to get a little more urgency. Weve been a little sloppy and we can execute a little better. To get an idea how long its been since the Red Wings skated out of Philadelphia with a win, goaltender Mike Vernon beat Ron Hextall and Garth Snow, who are now the general managers of the Flyers and Islanders. After winning six in a row, the Red Wings (6-4-0) are coming off back-to-back losses to Boston and Florida and have managed just two goals in the defeats. They have been outshot by an average of 32-28 this season and have placed an emphasis on puck possession.Thats one thing we have to get a little better at, said Zetterberg, who has no goals and four assists in 10 games. I think when you take care of the puck better and win battles and complete passes you keep the puck and we havent done that lately. The Flyers (4-5-1) are coming off Sunday nights 4-3 win in Raleigh against the Carolina Hurricanes but have been playing fire wagon hockey to start the season. They rank third in the NHL in goals scored, but second in goals allowed. The Flyers and their opponents have combined to average 7.3 goals per game, well above the average of six goals. The Flyers goaltending has been inconsistent all season. Steve Mason (2-4-1, 3.46 goals-against average, .878 save percentage) and Michael Neuvirth (2-1-0, 3.84 GAA, .861 SP) have struggled in the first 10 games of the season.Neuvy and I have our own things to clean up before we worry about whats going on (in front of us), Mason told the South Jersey Courier-Post. I think as a whole, we need to get cleaner getting out of our own zone. Weve created our own problems a lot of times where it kind of bites us in the butt and causes a goal to happen. First and foremost, gotta worry about stopping the puck, and if Neuvy and I stop the puck at a better rate, our in-zone play will be better as well. The Red Wings claimed forward Martin Frk off waivers Tuesday and assigned him to AHL Grand Rapids. Flyers forward Michael Raffl is eligible to come off injured reserve on Wednesday. If he does, look for center Boyd Gordon to go on injured reserve with an upper body injury expected to keep him sidelined one week. Tracey comes to the Blue Bombers after spending over a decade with Queens University. Most recently he was the schools assistant football coach. TORONTO -- Mike Babcock talks and walks -- or jogs after a morning skate or practice -- like a man full of confidence. Two Olympic gold medals along with Stanley Cup and World Cup titles will do that.Babcock is embarking on his second season in charge of the Toronto Maple Leafs, the NHLs worst team last season and one of the leagues most storied franchises. Two weeks ago, Babcock led Canada to the World Cup of Hockey title right here in Toronto, winning every game along the way -- just as he did two years ago at the Olympics to extend a best-on-best winning streak to 16.Now hes back with the lowly Leafs, who will play in the leagues season opener Wednesday night at Ottawa. It wont be weird at all, Babcock insisted in an interview with The Associated Press.Unlike last year, Babcock believes -- or sounds as if he does -- that Toronto has a shot to be competitive.Babcock raved about the front office, led by Brendan Shanahan and Lou Lamoriello, and its efforts to reshape a roster that was in rough shape a year ago when he arrived after 10 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. Toronto gave him a $50 million, eight-year contract to turn things around and are making moves to give him a better roster. These guys have done an unbelievable job of restocking the cupboard in a hurry, he said. And, getting us in a good financial situation. The Maple Leafs made a forward-thinking trade last February, dealing Dion Phaneuf to the Senators to shed the remaining five years of his contract at a cap hit of $7 million. They went from four games under .500 with Phaneuf to winning just 10 of the last 31 games, plummeting to the bottom of the league with an NHL-low 69 points and their fewest victories in four-plus decadess.ddddddddddddBy design, the Maple Leafs didnt overspend for a relatively lackluster group of free agents last summer. Were going to build from within and if theres a right fit for us in free agency, well do that, he said.Toronto won the draft lottery and landed 19-year-old center Auston Matthews . He is part of a young core group that has Babcock excited, along with Mitch Marner, the No. 4 pick overall last year; Connor Brown, a 22-year-old wing; Zach Hyman, a 24-year-old center; Morgan Rielly, a 22-year-old defenseman; and 24-year-old defenseman Nikita Zaitsev, who has been a standout in Russias top league. The names go on and on, Babcock said.It didnt take long for Matthews to figure out what his new coach was all about when he returned from his World Cup duties to lead the Maple Leafs.Very demanding. Very structural, Matthews said. I think that is a positive. He obviously knows what hes doing. His resume speaks for itself. No coach, in fact, has accomplished what Babcock has in hockey. The 53-year-old Babcock is the only coach who has won Olympic gold -- two, in fact -- a Stanley Cup, World Cup and world championship. Its called good players, Babcock said. I finished dead last in the National Hockey League last year over an 82-game period. Worst coach in hockey. So lets not get carried away here. But make no mistake, Babcock is convinced he can help Toronto chase its first Stanley Cup since 1967.The more you win, the more you feel like you can win, he said.---Follow Larry Lage at www.twitter.com/larrylage and follow his work at www.bigstory.ap.org/content/larry-lage ' ' '
