Reigning USA Track and Field steeplechase outdoor champion Emma Coburn wants people to know one thing: Runners are strong too.I think a lot of long distance runners look lean and they look fragile, but I think a lot of runners are much stronger than people give them credit for -- and are much better athletes than they are given credit for, said Coburn. We do functional movement testing -- and thats not strength, but again, how you move. The score is out of 21, and I scored a 20 on it. Thats just all-around movement and all-around strength and flexibility. The two-time NCAA 3,000-meter steeplechase outdoor champion and 2016 Rio Olympian?sat down with ESPN The Magazine for the 2016 Body Issue to talk about how running one of the longest track and field events helps her stay fit and to remember her roots.Lifelong preparationCoburn credits growing up in the mountainous town of Crested Butte, Colorado, for making her into the athlete she is today.I think physically having a diverse athletic background has helped me become a stronger runner, in terms of muscular development and coordination.People write all the time about the physical and mental benefits of not specializing in a sport too young because you dont burn out. I was happy to not really take running too seriously as my No. 1 sport until my junior year of high school -- and even then, I still competed in other sports. An all-around healthy bodyThe steeplechase is a 3,000-meter run that involves four barrier jumps over 4x4 blocks of wood and seven water jumps over a 10-foot water pit.Unlike some sports, where leg or arm strength is necessary for success, total body strength is the key to success in the steeplechase.Im happy that my sport and event encourages a well-rounded, healthy body. We have to be strong to be able to go over the barriers, but we also have to be lean.TrainingCoburns training is filled with variety, but there are a few things she does almost every day.Daily runsNot a day goes by that Coburn is not running. She runs seven days a week -- some days she runs twice -- totaling 80 miles each week.Hitting the weightsLifting weights has become one of her favorite training activities. She does not lift heavy weights, but she enjoys the TRX and BOSU ball workouts.Coordination drillsCoburn does plyometric drills and other body-movement exercises to prepare for the array of movements required during a race. She has to be very coordinated to be able to run and jump on cue in a race. This summer, espnW is running stories, essays and letters on body image as part of a series called Love, My Body. ATLANTA -- Braves fans having been anxiously waiting for their first look at shortstop Dansby Swanson, Atlantas top prospect. They will get that on Wednesday night against the Minnesota Twins. The Braves announced Tuesday that they will promote the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 draft from Double-A Mississippi and have him in the lineup for the finale of a two-game interleague series against the Twins. We dont expect him to come up here and be the savior, but we feel like this is an opportunity for us to take a good look and get him some experience up here in the big leagues, Braves president of baseball operations John Hart said. He has a lot of intangibles that I think will translate and we dont think hes going to be overwhelmed when he comes up.Swanson, 22, played just 127 minor league games and had a modest .261 batting average with Mississippi after an early-season promotion from Class A Advanced Carolina, where he hit .333.The native of Marietta, Ga., had a combined .362 on-base percentage with 39 extra-base hits and 55 RBI in 105 total games with Mississippi and Carolina. This is a very smart kid, and hes a good player, Hart said. However he performs up here, I think its going to do nothing but be beneficial for him and for us as we go to make a decision as to what we do with the shortstop position next year. The Braves opened a spot for the former Vanderbilt All-American by trading shortstop Erick Aybar to Detroit on Tuesday for utility player Mike Aviles and catching prospect Kade Scivicque. The 32-year-old Aybar was acquired from the Los Angeles Angels last winter as part of the Andrelton Simmons to give the Braves a stopgap shortstop until Swanson was ready.Aybar, who got off to a slow start, hit .360 in his final 19 contests with the Braaves to get his average up to .dddddddddddd42 in 97 games. An MRI taken of Miguel Sanos sore right elbow revealed no structural damage, which was good news for the Twins. The bad news, though, is that the Twins cant use a designated hitter against the Braves and Sano arm is questionable for third base.Hes got to show hes ready to make throws, manager Paul Molitor said. When hes ready, hell get a chance to play some defense.Sano wasnt used as a pinch-hitting option as the Twins won 4-2 in the opener of the two-game set and could also sit out the series finale, although Molitor didnt rule out a return to the lineup.Right-hander Mike Folytnewicz (6-5, 4.50 ERA) will start for the Braves against Twins right-hander Kyle Gibson (4-6, 4.86 ERA).Folynewicz got credit for credit for the Braves 9-7 victory at Minnesota on July 27 that completed a two-game sweep.Gibson hasnt pitched against the Braves in his career, but has struggled in interleague games, going 2-7 with a 6.10 ERA in 11 games against the National League.Sano has hit well despite being limited to DH duties for a while, batting .304 with four homers and seven RBI over his last six games before having the MRI on Monday, a day off for the Twins. We were hoping that would be the case, Molitor said of the good MRI results. There is no repercussion from surgery (in 2014). Its just a matter that he had a little bit of a sore elbow. After not throwing much for more than a week, Sano took ground balls and made throws to first base before the first game against the Braves.Sano, 23, has a .250/.342/.491 slash line with 20 homers, 16 doubles and 50 RBI in 84 games this season.
