FRISCO, Texas -- Fabian Castillo scored in the 33rd minute and Raul Fernandez made six saves for his fifth shutout of the season, leading FC Dallas to a 1-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night. With Dallas clinging to the one-goal lead, San Jose peppered Fernandez over the final 13 minutes, forcing him to make five saves, but was unable to break through. MLS-leading Dallas (8-2-3), which had its unbeaten streak snapped at nine games last weekend with a 4-2 loss at Seattle, is 7-0-1 at home this season -- outscoring opponents 13-4. "I think his performance is some of the best that Ive ever seen in this league," FC Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman said of Fernandez. "Tonight he was very good, he took control, but we gave the ball away a little too easily that last 20 minutes and we made it a lot tougher on ourselves." San Jose (3-5-6) has only one victory in its last 10 matches and is winless in six road games this season. "We had plenty of chances, especially in the second half," said Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop. "Its just the way our seasons going right now. We played pretty well tonight against a good team at home and didnt get anything out of the game. We arent getting many breaks." Fernandez made back-to-back diving saves in the 78th minute, denying Shea Salinas 25-yard blast and then about 30 seconds later stopping Adam Jahns 15-yard attempt. Fernandez, who shook off a somewhat violent collision with Jahn in the third minute, then stopped Chris Wondolowskis 10-yard volley in the 81st. Wondolowski, who matched the MLS record for goals in a season with 27 last year, nearly tied it again early in stoppage time with a leaping header, but another diving save by Fernandez kept it out. "He made some great saves, credit him, he was in the right place to make those saves, but truthfully, I think I need to finish those, no matter whos in net," said Wondolowski, who has five goals this year. All the offence FC Dallas would need came on Castillos second goal of the season and first since March 23, a span of eight games. After receiving a nice lead pass from David Ferreira, Castillo cut into the middle from the right wing and ripped a left-footed low shot from 15 yards that rolled just beyond the reach of Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch, just inside the far post. The assist was the fourth of the season for Ferreira, who had missed the previous two games with a strained left hamstring. "It was a great play by David," Castillo said through an interpreter. "On this play, David took the ball, he went at the defence and I just kept running by him. When he saw me open, he made a great pass for me and then I did what I know how to do, which is cut to the inside and I got a great shot for the goal." San Jose nearly tied it in the 41st, but Victor Bernardezs 20-yard blast bounced off the crossbar. Dallas had an opportunity to extend its lead just after halftime, but Jacksons booming shot from 20 yards out curled just wide of the right goalpost. FC Dallas had another golden opportunity to go up by two in the 53rd after Castillo and Ferreira executed a perfect give-and-go that sent Castillo in on net alone before Busch charged out and made a nice sliding save on Castillos shot from 10 yards. Dallas lost striker Kenny Cooper in the 66th minute after an apparent head injury. Cooper was shoved by Bernardez out of bounds, and as Cooper went down, Bernardezs foot appeared to hit Cooper in the back of the head. After staying down for about two minutes he seemed a bit wobbly on his feet and was immediately helped to the locker room. "I think he was knocked out a little bit, thats the information I have, and now were getting information from our head specialist," said Hyndman. OAKLAND, Calif. -- Steve Kerr fully expects NBA players to take up their own version of 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernicks stand against racial oppression.Whether his own Golden State players show some kind of support or opt to protest during the national anthem once the season begins, he isnt sure. That will be a topic of discussion as a team this training camp for the Warriors, and the reigning NBA Coach of the Year already has had discussions with a few of his players individually about the issue and shared his personal thoughts. No matter what side of the spectrum youre on, I would hope every American is disgusted with what is going on around the country, what just happened in Tulsa ... with Terence Crutcher, said Kerr, who also has been outspoken on the issue of gun control given that his father, Malcolm, was murdered while he was the American University president in Beirut when Kerr was 18 and a freshman at the University of Arizona. It doesnt matter what side youre on the Kaepernick stuff, youd better be disgusted about the things that are happening.Kerr, whose Warriors won an NBA championship in his first season as coach then finished runner-up to LeBron James and Cleveland in June, will be challenged to blend his new team right away with Kevin Durant joining two-time reigning MVP Stephen Curry and fellow All-Stars and Durants U.S. gold-medal winning Olympic teammates, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson. And Kerr encourages his players to talk about social issues far beyond the basketball court -- and speak up for what they believe in when done carefully. Our guys have already been asked a lot about it. Its a tricky topic, not the Kaepernick situation but just social activism in general, Kerr said Wednesday. It has to come from the heart. Theres a lot of fans ouut there that say, `Stick to sports, were trying to get away from all this by watching your team play, and I understand that.ddddddddddddOn the other hand, these guys do have a voice. As long as the message is clear, Im all for people speaking out against injustice. Whatever form that takes, if its non-violent and it leads to conversation, then I think thats a good thing.Kerr has paid close attention to Kaepernick, who said Tuesday he has received death threats for his decision to kneel through the anthem. But Kaepernick also has made a point that he supports military members and is speaking out against police brutality and shootings of African-Americans.I would think that something similar will happen in the NBA, Kerr said. Nobody has to be right, nobody has to be wrong. I would hope that everybody sort of respects each others point of view. There are valid points of view on both sides. ... I understand people who are offended by his stance, maybe they have a military family member who is offended or maybe they lost somebody in a war and that flag or the anthem means a lot more to them than someone else. Then you flip it around and what about non-violent protests? Its America, this is what our countrys about, its non-violent protesting. Thats what it should be about.Like many others who have supported Kaepernick even if they might disagree with his methods, Kerr appreciates how the quarterback has opened up an important conversation in this country. We like to talk about stuff, basketball or not, and I think its probably one of the best things thats come out of the Kaepernick issue is that people are talking, Kerr said. Its a good thing. ' ' '
