HAMBURG - Hamburger SV has appointed Mirko Slomka as coach to replace the fired Bert van Marwijk with the task of steering the side away from Bundesliga relegation. Slomka, who was sacked by league rival Hannover in December, received a contract until mid-2016, Hamburg said. "Now we need a good start," Slomka said at his presentation on Monday. Hamburg hosts third-place Borussia Dortmund for his first match in charge. "Hamburg should be among the top five clubs in Germany," Slomka said. Van Marwijk was fired after Saturdays 4-2 defeat at Bundesliga bottom side Eintracht Braunschweig, now just one point behind Hamburg with 13 games remaining. It was Hamburgs seventh consecutive league loss, and its eighth overall including Wednesdays 5-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the German Cup. Slomka, 46, saved Hannover from relegation after taking over in January 2010 and twice led the side into the Europa League. He had been out of work since Dec. 27, when he was sacked following Hannovers disappointing first half to the season. The side went into the winter break in 13th place, four points clear of the relegation zone. He is the third coach Hamburg has had this season. Thorsten Fink was also fired following the clubs lacklustre start to the campaign. Hamburg, the only side to have played every season of the Bundesliga since its formation in 1963, said Van Marwijks dismissal was in response to "the seventh loss in a row and to slipping to 17th in the table." Manager Oliver Kreuzer and chief executive Carl-Edgar Jarchow had backed the 61-year-old Van Marwijk to keep his job during a week of turmoil at the club, despite pressure from within to appoint former coach and player Felix Magath in his place. Instead, Magath was appointed coach of Premier League bottom side Fulham on Friday. As a player, Magath led Hamburg to its Champions Cup title in 1983. Since its German Cup win in 1987, Hamburg has not won a title. Van Marwijk, a former Netherlands coach, lasted only 143 days. Hamburg has the worst defence in the Bundesliga with 51 goals conceded in 21 games. The side has conceded at least three goals in its last seven games in all competitions. Yeezy Boost Køb . Scott Flory has been elected president, Jay McNeil will serve as first vice-president and Marwan Hage of the Ottawa Redblacks will serve as second vice-president, the CFLPA said Monday in a statement. Flory succeeds Mike Morreale as president. The 2014-15 executive committee also includes third vice-president Jeff Keeping of the Toronto Argonauts and treasurer Brian Ramsay of the Edmonton Eskimos. The CFLPA is set to hold talks with the league April 10-11. "This CBA negotiation, coinciding as it does with the start of the leagues new five-year deal with TSN, is a perfect time to revisit some of the past revenue concessions made by the CFL players and negotiate a deal that is fair and reasonable for both the players and the league," Flory said. Player health and safety issues, career transitioning and pension improvements are also expected to be discussed. The leagues current collective bargaining agreement with the players expires May 30. Flory said he is expectting changes going forward.dddddddddddd. "Our members have worked hard to provide high-calibre entertainment on the field, as well as a strong CFL presence in their communities, both of which have contributed significantly to the success of the league," he said. "While the CFLPA agrees that we must remain sensible and smart about our business, the burden of financial responsibility is not one that can or should be borne solely by the players. "While we want to continue to play the game that we love, we will not play the 2014 season under the terms of the current CBA." In a release earlier in the month, commissioner Mark Cohon said labour negotiations will be kept private. "Out of respect for this important process, and for our players, I never discuss negotiations in the media or in public," Cohon said. "We are committed to working towards a fair and reasonable agreement with our players. We want to be fair to them and keep our league on the path to being strong as well as stable." The 2014 season is slated to begin June 26 with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers home to the Toronto Argonauts. ' ' '
