EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Alec Ogletree intercepted Bryce Petty with just under 2 minutes left, lifting the Los Angeles Rams to a 9-6 victory over the New York Jets in a snoozer Sunday.Petty made his first NFL start in place of an injured Ryan Fitzpatrick, but couldnt get much going against the Rams defense. After getting the ball with 2:55 remaining and down by three, Petty tried to lead the Jets (3-7) down the field. But on second-and-7 from the 42, Pettys pass to Quincy Enunwa was picked off by Ogletree and Enunwa tried to wrestle it away from the linebacker to no avail.Greg Zuerlein kicked three field goals, including a go-ahead 34-yarder with 6:52 left, helping the Rams (4-5) snap a four-game losing streak and avoid their first five-game skid since weeks 9-13 last season. The game featured 15 punts -- eight by the Jets and seven by the Rams -- as neither offense were the models of efficiency or excitement. New York finished with 296 yards of total offense, while the Rams had 280.Petty, a fourth-round draft pick out of Baylor last year, went 19 of 32 for 163 yards with a touchdown and the loss-sealing interception.Fitzpatrick was listed as questionable with a sprained left knee , suffered last weekend at Miami. Coach Todd Bowles said throughout the week that Fitzpatrick would remain the starter for Sundays game -- as long as he was healthy enough to play. After the game, Bowles said Fitzpatrick wasnt completely healthy. The two split first-team snaps during practice all week.Fitzpatrick was active for the game and served as Pettys backup, while rookie Christian Hackenberg was inactive. Bowles would not commit to who his starter would be in the Jets next game against New England in two weeks. While Rams fans have been clamoring for No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff to play, Case Keenum went a ho-hum 17 of 30 for 165 yards, but had no turnovers after throwing eight interceptions in his previous four games.Petty drove the Jets 99 yards on the Jets second possession, finishing with his first NFL TD pass with a little razzle-dazzle on a toss to Brandon Marshall, who flipped it to Bilal Powell for a 4-yard score.Nick Folk was wide left on the extra point, his second miss of the season, leaving New York with a 6-3 lead early in the second quarter. The drive was helped by a perfectly placed 52-yard pass to Robby Anderson down the left sideline and a 28-yard run by Matt Forte that put the ball at the Rams 5. Forte finished with 98 yards on 20 carries.Zuerlein gave the Rams a 3-0 lead on their opening drive with a 20-yard field goal, but Los Angeles could have had more. After a 25-yard catch by Kenny Britt and a 24-yard run by Benny Cunningham, the Rams had first-and-goal on the Jets 1 but couldnt punch it in.Zuerlein tied it at 6 with 20 seconds left in the third quarter with a 38-yard field goal.SO CLOSEPetty misfired on a long pass on third-and-14 from the Rams 32 that couldve been an easy touchdown in the closing minute of the first half, slightly overthrowing Anderson, who was wide open but had to reach high as the ball tipped off his hand.GURLEY STILL GROUNDEDTodd Gurley, last seasons Offensive Rookie of Year, still has yet to run for 100 yards in a game this season after rushing for 125 or more five times last season. He finished with 64 yards on 21 carries. Gurleys longest run of the season, 21 yards in the fourth quarter, was wiped out by Greg Robinsons holding penalty.FIELD FLIPPERWith the Rams pinned at their 17 on fourth-and-1 early in the fourth quarter, Johnny Hekker blasted a 78-yard punt that had returner Jalin Marshall fielding as if he were catching a pass. After a 10-yard return by Marshall, the Jets had the ball at their 15 -- and went three-and-out. It was the fourth-longest punt in franchise history.UP NEXTRams: vs. Miami next Sunday.Jets: bye week. Veteran free-agent addition Kevin Kolb has six seasons of NFL experience. None of that will factor into Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrones approach in determining which quarterback will win the starting job over the next six weeks. "What I look at is its really which players can we put on the field to win now," Marrone said, after being asked if the Manuel has the edge because hes regarded as the teams future. "A lot of people talk about the future. And really the future for us as coaches and as a team is now." Without preconceptions, Marrone will base his decision on what happens on the field in a competition that resumed Sunday night, when the Bills opened training camp with their first practice in suburban Rochester. Kolb got a majority of playing time with the starters, with Manuel spending most of his time with the second unit. Manuel wowed the crowd by hitting T.J. Graham on a pair of deep passes up the right sideline. He should have had another long completion, but rookie second-round pick Robert Woods dropped the ball in the end zone. Kolb was inconsistent hitting deep passes, but did complete a perfectly placed touch pass to tight end Scott Chandler just inside the right sideline. Marrone plans to increase Manuels time with the starters, and expects to have both evenly split practices. Marrone also revealed for the first time on Sunday that he intends to pick his starter about 10 days before the Bills opener against the New England Patriots on Sept. 8. By then, Marrone expects it will be apparent to him and the entire team which one has earned the job. "You cant succumb to speculation of down the road this person will be a better player," said Marrone, the first-time head coach who replaced Chan Gailey in January. "Im looking for who is the best player now." Manuel has been excited for the opportunity ever since the Bills selected him with the 16th pick, making the Florida State product the only quarterback chosen in the first round of the draft in April. "I think its a huge opportunity," Manuel said. "Obviously, I want to come out and make everybody happy, all the people in the front office." At 6-foot-4 and 237 pounds, Manuel has the size and showed off his arm-strength during spring practices.dddddddddddd And yet, the Florida State product still has much to improve after Marrone noted that Manuel lacked "polish." Upon arriving at camp Friday, Manuel said hes not taken a day off since the Bills last practice on June 13. Hes worked on his footwork and mechanics, while also poring over the playbook to become comfortable with the up-tempo style of offence Marrone is introducing. "I think I made a lot of progress," said Manuel, who went 25-6 as a college starter. "So Im looking forward to seeing how I go out there and do." Manuel has already moved up the depth chart after the Bills cut veteran Tarvaris Jackson last month. Centre Eric Wood liked what he saw from Manuel during spring minicamps. "Hes got some leadership skills, hes got a great arm, athletic: A lot of things you look for in a quarterback," Wood said. "Now comes time to make some plays when the pads are on." For Kolb, competing for a starting job has become a familiar offseason exercise in his latest attempt to kick-start a career hampered by injuries. "I could probably just pull out a tape recorder from the last three years and hit play. Its nothing new," Kolb said. "Its always been a competition. Ive always had something to prove. And theres no better way to go about it." Staying healthy has been a key issue for Kolb, who has 28 touchdowns, 25 interceptions and a 9-12 record as a starter in 34 games split between Philadelphia and Arizona. Selected by the Eagles in the second round of the 2007 draft, Kolb was supposed to be Donovan McNabbs successor. Kolb barely got the chance. He was injured in the 2009 opener and eventually lost the starting job to Michael Vick. Kolb got a chance for a fresh start in 2011, when he was traded to the Cardinals and signed a five-year, $63 million contract. He went 5-6 as a starter in Arizona, with injuries ending both his seasons. Kolb respects Marrones approach to the competition. "Everywhere Ive been, whenever the starter is named, most of the team feels the same way," Kolb said. "So hopefully theres a drastic separation, and we can move forward and theres no question about who it should be. Of course, Im here to compete, and hopefully thats me." ' ' '
