FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The past week has been a whirlwind of bad decisions and a second chance for Austin Seferian-Jenkins.Last Friday, he was in the back of a police cruiser, arrested and charged with DUI. A few hours later, he was cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Just three days later, the tight end was claimed off waivers by the New York Jets, who were willing to give Seferian-Jenkins a chance at redemption. You know, whats in the past is in the past, Seferian-Jenkins said after his first practice with the Jets on Thursday -- his 24th birthday. Im just thankful for this opportunity. Theres an agreement here and an understanding of whats expected of me. ... Im going to take full advantage of it and really approach it as hard as I can and go as hard as I can with it.He wouldnt discuss any details of his arrest or whether he has an alcohol problem, citing legal and personal matters, respectively. But he acknowledged being cut by the Buccaneers after his latest legal issue was a wakeup call.Im thankful for the opportunity that I have a new home already, Seferian-Jenkins said. Like I said, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. And one he knows he is lucky to have. He used the word `thankful 12 times and `opportunity at least 17 times while meeting with reporters in front of his Jets locker, which still didnt have his name or number affixed.I have to hold up my end of the bargain and do whats expected of me, he said. Im looking forward to it.Seferian-Jenkins was charged last Friday in Florida with DUI and violation of an ignition interlock device restriction from an arrest in Washington while he was in college in 2013.The Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release that Seferian-Jenkins was driving between 75 and 80 mph on Interstate 275 when his vehicle cut in front of a troopers cruiser and weaved back and forth. Seferian-Jenkins refused a breath test at the Hillsborough County Jail and was released by the Buccaneers later that day.A video posted by TMZ showed dash cam footage from the troopers cruiser of the arrest, during which Seferian-Jenkins repeatedly told the officer he had to use the bathroom.Yes, we sat down and we talked about it, Jets coach Todd Bowles said. We have a clear understanding of what I expect and he has a clear understanding of what hes going to get from me and the rest of the team, so well just go from there. The tight end was also told to leave Buccaneers practice during the summer for, according to coach Dirk Koetter, not knowing what he was doing.Bowles didnt offer much when asked what his impressions were of Seferian-Jenkins when the two sat down at the team facility Wednesday.Of course anybody coming in is going to say all the right things, but your actions speak louder than your words, Bowles said. He has a clean slate with us. Going forward, well see what he does.Bowles wouldnt speculate whether the two DUI incidents were isolated issues or a recurring problem for Seferian-Jenkins. The coach was also asked if Seferian-Jenkins seemed remorseful for his actions.Youre remorseful with your parents, Bowles said. He doesnt have to say anything to me other than hes ready to play. We did our homework going in, so were not going to sit here and rehash anything. Were just going to give him a chance to play and do the right thing and see if he does it.Wide receiver Brandon Marshall reached out to Seferian-Jenkins before he was cut by the Buccaneers, and told reporters after a charity event this week that the move by the Jets is God sent, adding that guys need second chances.Marshall, who has dealt with his own off-field issues over the years, has quickly established himself as someone Seferian-Jenkins can lean on as he begins his tenure with the Jets.Hes definitely helped me out a lot and given me all the resources that I need in the city to get the help that I need and get the support that I need, Seferian-Jenkins said. Im really appreciative of that and very thankful that he reached out to me. It means a lot to me.Seferian-Jenkins was a second-round pick out of Washington in 2014 and has 45 career catches for 603 yards and seven touchdowns, including two this season. At 6-foot-5 and 262 pounds, he could provide the Jets with a big target in the red zone, an area they have struggled a bit this season. Theyve got just six touchdowns in 16 trips in the opponents 20-yard line.Ive had one day on the practice field with him, but hes a good-looking, young player, offensive coordinator Chan Gailey said. I think well evaluate as time goes on, but he looks like a guy that is going to eventually play and have a role on our football team in some way, shape or form. What that is? Time tells. It was uncertain whether Seferian-Jenkins would be up to speed with the Jets playbook in time to play Sunday against Seattle.Well see how much he can gather mentally, Bowles said.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFLOnitsuka Tiger Serrano White . Onitsuka Tiger Serrano Womens .com) - The women will also have a new champion at the Australian Open. New?Anaheim Ducks?coach Randy Carlyle doesnt expect his team to look all that different, systematically at least, from last year. The difference will come in its lineup construction and deployment. Carlyle thinks it needs more youth and energy. You always have to transition youth into your lineup, he said during a recent phone conversation. Were a budget hockey club; were going to be forced to use younger players. With youth comes a little more pace. Its usually the veteran players who know how to slow the game down and make it work at their speed. Ryan Getzlaf is as good at that as anyone. But during offseason phone conversations between Carlyle -- who coached the Ducks from 2005-06 until early in the 2011-12 season and won a Stanley Cup with the franchise -- and his former players, like Getzlaf and Corey Perry, the pace of play became the central part of discussions. They play more of a pace game. Theyre veteran players. Thats one of the things were going to ask them -- to play the game at a higher pace, Carlyle said.He doesnt need any more proof they can do it. Carlyle watched the pair play for Team Canada in the World Cup and saw the kind of skating hes going to require from his veteran players, especially Getzlaf. And Corey Perry is in the best shape hes ever been in, Carlyle said. They put the work in. Its a tribute to them.Best new facesGM Bob Murray was aggressive in addressing his roster needs before last season, and the result was a team that took half of a season to get going. The biggest change this time around is behind the bench, while the main pieces of the roster have been essentially untouched -- except for one position.Frederik Andersen is gone as the starting goalie, with John Gibson now expected to get a majority of the starts. Gibson has long been regarded as a great, young goalie, but now comes the moment of truth. He had a .920 save percentage in 38 starts last season, even earning enough votes to finish tied for seventh in the Vezina. After the Maple Leafs gave Jonathan Bernier his signing bonus, the Ducks grabbed him in a trade for a conditional draft pick. It was a shrewd move for a budget-conscious team that has cap space but gets Bernier at a discount, after Toronto paid his bonus.Bernier had his best season as a starter while playing for Carlyle in Toronto, finishing the 2013-14 season with a .923 save percentage. He struggled last season, but playing for a bad team tends to do that to goalies.Everybody in the league is looking more to the 1A and 1B situations, Carlyle said. Yes, Gibby is highly rated. Its hard not to give him an opportunnity.dddddddddddd. Goaltenders have to earn it. You have to earn it night in and night out. We feel we have a capable option in Jonathan Bernier.Biggest unknownsIts not particularly great that the Ducks had two restricted free-agent no-shows at the start of training camp, with Hampus Lindholm and Rickard Rakell?both still unsigned when camp began. Not only was Rakell unsigned, he was dealing with complications that followed his appendectomy in September.Even if both of those situations get settled, you never know how a player is going to react following an intense contract negotiation. The bigger concern in Anaheim is the possibility of a decline coming from its aging stars. The Ducks are very dependent on the trio of Getzlaf, Perry and Ryan Kesler. When theyre on and playing well, the Ducks can beat anybody. Theyre also at the collective age where its not unreasonable to expect some depreciation, especially considering the style in which they play. As the league speeds up and gets younger, its quite possible that trio will get old in a hurry. Maybe not this year ... but the clock is ticking.Sure thingsHeres one --?Sami Vatanen is going to outplay the value of his contract. During an offseason in which teams struggled to get deals done with their restricted free agents, Vatanen was off Anaheims to-do list quite early. He signed a four-year deal worth $19.5 million in mid-June.With an average annual value of $4.875 million, his contract is going to look good in a hurry.I wanted to be there, Vatanen said. That was the main thing. I saw the GM and coaches -- they wanted me there. It helped a lot. Im very happy about that. They wanted the 25-year-old defenseman for good reason. He has pushed 40 points each of the last two seasons, is offensively gifted and is a right-handed shot. Lindholm is the best pure defenseman on the roster, good enough to challenge for a Norris Trophy at some point. But Vatanen is the kind of defenseman you need behind your top guys to keep the puck moving in the right direction.PredictionThe Duck have concerns. Is John Gibson ready to be a full-time starter? Will the contract issues linger into the season? How will the team respond to the return of Randy Carlyle? But, ultimately, this team has too many good defensemen and star power up front to decline too far below their 103-point total from last season. The Ducks will clear the playoff hurdle but maybe not as easily as theyd like to. Second place in the Pacific. ' ' '
