ORLANDO -- Jarrion Lawson is the mens winner of The Bowerman Award. The former Arkansas standout won four NCAA titles in 2016, including a historic three at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He is the first Razorback to win collegiate track & fields highest individual honor, which was handed out Friday night at the Orlando Grande Lakes Resort. It was like a relief feeling, Lawson said of hearing his name. Actually, I was more nervous for the womens Bowerman than the mens Bowerman. I dont know why. That initial anticpiation of you dont know who the winner is and the men are second.Lawson joins a prestigious fraternity of former male winners, headlined by two-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time world record holder Ashton Eaton (2010). Galen Rupp (2009) and Derek Drouin (2013) also won two Olympic medals, while Deon Lendore (2014) captured bronze at the 2012 London Olympic Games. What Lawson did at Historic Hayward Field in June was nothing short of remarkable. Lawson became the first man since Jesse Owens in 1936 to win the 100, 200 and long jump titles at the same NCAA meet. The Razorback star also ran a leg of the teams 4×100 relay (which finished 3rd) and in turn, shattered the modern-day scoring record.Lawson faced tough competition for The Bowerman Award as Texas A&Ms Donavan Brazier and Oregons Edward Cheserek were also finalists. Brazier broke Jim Ryuns 50-year-old collegiate record in the 800 on its golden anniversary, while Cheserek - the first three-time finalist in the history of The Bowerman Award - won five NCAA titles (four individual, one relay) and was the first man to sweep the distance slate clean (3000-5000-DMR indoors, 5000-10000 outdoors) in seven years.I had confidence [that Id win] just because I like to believe in myself, Lawson said. Thats where it all starts. When you believe in yourself before you can achieve something great. Just knowing what I did in the outdoor season and having four national championships this year, I feel like I performed well enough to win The Bowerman Award. This is the third consecutive year that a male athlete from the SEC won The Bowerman Award. Lendore started the trend in 2014 and former Florida horizontal jumper and 2016 World Indoor gold medalist Marquis Dendy continued it last year. Dendy was there Friday night to hand off The Bowerman Award to Lawson.Just to see the trophy is one thing, but to be the winner of it - just like I said about it on stage - is a surreal experience, Lawson said. This thing looks like its made of all gold. Its heavy. Its definintely the biggest trophy that Ive ever won. Just to add it to my awards is a big honor.Cheap Ottawa Senators Jerseys . - After leading the Saints to a fourth playoff appearance in five seasons, Drew Brees expressed confidence in the direction of his team and, perhaps more importantly, showed a willingness to listen to contract proposals if the team needs his help getting under the NFLs salary cap. The group had eight drops in a way-too-close 30-24 win over Troy last week and they want to turn things around against South Carolina State (0-2) on Saturday. The problem is not with just one or two players, its across the board for Clemsons receivers. Usually reliable wideouts including Artavis Scott, Hunter Renfrow, Mike Williams and Deon Cain all have dropped catchable balls the first two weeks.Receivers coach Jeff Scott counted eight drops against Troy.Thats enough for a whole season, he said.Coach Dabo Swinney, Clemsons former receivers coach, spent time this week working with receivers to sure up their technique and early season confidence.Swinney said he felt like he needed to get in there with receivers coach Jeff Scott and get back to some of the things we needed to do just from a drill standpoint and creating the eye intensity that it takes and the confidence.Even with more drops, dont expect the FCS Bulldogs to make this one tight -- Clemson has won its three matchups with South Carolina State by a combined 179-20 score. Still, Swinney and the receivers are thinking down the road for when the Atlantic Coast Conference season begins.Clemsons receiving rotation took a hit this week with Renfrows broken hand suffered when he caught a TD against Troy. Renfrow had been the Tigers touchdown maker with TD catches in four consecutive games.Cain and Ray-Ray McCloud will see extra action with Renfrow, expected to miss four games, on the sidelines.Swinney liked what he saw this week. There is a lot of pride in that group and nobody needs to tell them they need to do a better job, Swinney said.---Some things to watch when South Carolina State plays No. 5 Clemson:POSITIVE WATSON: Cleemson quarterback Deshaun Watson apologized to fans for the negative energy he showed that he believed impacted the team in a 30-24 win over Troy last Saturday.dddddddddddd Watson says hell be refocused on the positives of his college career and channel that into better performances. Pough said Clemson will likely be more focused to fix the problems it has endured this year. Well have our work cut out for us this coming Saturday, he said.CLEMSON VS. THE FCS: The Tigers come into this one with a 30-0 mark against programs in the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly known as Division I-AA. Clemsons average margin of victory in those games has been 40-7. The closest call came in 2011 when Wofford lost 35-27, Clemsons only single-digit result against an FCS teamTHE WAITING: South Carolina State waited four hours last week through lightning and weather delays before falling 53-24 at Louisiana Tech, a game that ended at 2 a.m. Bulldogs coach Buddy Pough said it looked like the game would be called and had his team ready to leave when the call came that things would go on. It was a very unusual circumstance to say the least, Pough said.OLD FACES: South Carolina State brings in two first-year coaches quite familiar with Clemsons Death Valley in defensive coordinator Kirk Botkin and offensive coordinator G.A. Mangus. The two were longtime members of South Carolinas staff under Steve Spurrier who were not retained by new coach Will Muschamp.----AP College Football: collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
