Dane Piedt is considering all options to further his cricket career in England and would not be averse to a Kolpak deal, according to his agent Francois Brink. Piedt, who has played seven Tests for South Africa, most recently in August, would ideally welcome a stint as an overseas player on the county circuit but is open to other offers as well.He is looking for a deal but whether that is overseas or Kolpak, we are waiting to see, Brink told ESPNcricinfo. Dane is still keen to play for South Africa and if a Kolpak offer came it would require heavy consideration. At the moment, there is nothing on the table and he is fully committed to South Africa.Should Piedt opt for the Kolpak route, he would be the fourth recent Test cap to pause his international career and head for England after Stiaan van Zyl, Simon Harmer and Hardus Viljoen all signed for counties from the 2017 season. There is talk of at least two other players involved in the South Africa Test set-up being interested in similar deals.A source close to the players revealed that their reasons have as much to do with financial security and limited opportunities at home as they do with the uncertainty over what Brexit - the UK vote to leave the EU - will mean for South Africans looking to work there. We all know the Rand is declining but its when you see players like Dane Piedt or Stiaan van Zyl struggling to get into franchise teams for the domestic T20 because the teams need to meet targets, you understand why some of them are looking to leave, the insider said. For Piedt, who is non-white, the argument takes a different twist. CSAs transformation targets stipulate that franchises must field six players of colour, of which three must be black African - effectively leaving only three places for those of mixed race or Indian descent. As a result, Piedt has found it difficult to get game time at the Titans, where he is on loan from the Cobras. Piedt has been a regular in the Cobras first-class campaign this year.At national level, the team is required to have an average of six players of colour over the course of a season, of which at least two must be black African. Piedt has lost ground to Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi in the national selectors eyes but he has been included in the South African XI to play the touring Sri Lankans in a warm-up match starting this weekend. While transformation is being blamed for the possible talent drain, former South Africa captain Graeme Smith played it down as the reason for players looking elsewhere.Everyone is probably going to go the transformation angle but CSA have been honest and open about their transformation policies and I actually like that, Smith said. I think its nice to see that theyve put themselves out there. Free agency is one of the greatest challenges to world cricket today, with the twenty-over competitions and the opportunities to not only make money but forge careers in other parts of the world. He urged CSA to do its best to keep hold of the majority of players. Thats why the culture of South African cricket, the honesty, the value system needs to be really strong and hopefully that you will keep creating dreams that people want to play for the Proteas, that are greater than the monies they can earn elsewhere or the opportunities that lie out there, he said.CSA has indicated it is not overly concerned about the numbers that may be lost. Haroon Lorgat told the Guardian : We cannot restrain individuals from plying their trade. Over and above our regular reviews of the domestic playing rules and regulations to ensure it is fit for purpose, we will continue to rather focus on making sure that we have the best systems to produce the best cricketers in numbers. We have realised a long time back that the world is a global village with people very mobile. Like in every other country and across every other profession, South African citizens will venture abroad to take advantage of stronger currencies and employment opportunities. While the Rand has strengthened against the pound, it sits at over R17 at the moment and the lure of building a nest egg is too strong for some players to turn down, especially because they may not have that for much longer. The uncertainty over what changes to the UKs relationship with Europe will mean for Kolpak signings - which rely on trading agreements with the EU - means that a lot of players are looking to get in while they still can, the source said. LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Nothing about Kentuckys quest toward respectability was easy, and the win that finally put the Wildcats back in the postseason for the first time in six years required overcoming initial adversity. They regrouped by halftime and now look forward to playing in December for a change.Stephen Johnson came off the bench to throw two second-quarter touchdown passes, Benny Snell and Jojo Kemp each ran for two scores and Kentucky rallied past Austin Peay 49-13 on Saturday to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2010.Its a happy locker room, said Kentucky coach Mark Stoops, who added, they stayed the course, never flinched and its never easy. Weve just got to continue to push forward.Drama preceded the Wildcats postseason-clinching victory with the pregame announcement that little-used sophomore Luke Wright would start at quarterback instead of Johnson because of a left knee injury that wasnt previously disclosed. In-game anxiety followed as Kentucky trailed the FCS Governors 13-0 early in the second quarter and led to the emergency use of Johnson -- who looked healthy enough to guide his team into a 21-13 lead by halftime. They just wanted me in emergency situations, and not to go out there and get hurt even more, Johnson said.Snells 30-yard TD run got Kentucky (6-5) going before Johnsons scoring passes of 14 yards to C.J. Conrad and 40 to Garrett Johnson. The Wildcats broke it open as Boom Williams ran for a 25-yard TD, Snell scored from 48 and Kemp from 40 and 7 yards.Reaching six wins was huge for Kentucky after falling just short with back-to-back 5-7 finishes. The achievement looked even more elusive after a 0-2 start and a back injury to Drew Barker in the third game that propelled Johnson into the starters role. Those struggles were forgotten on a cold, blustery evening before 48,948 that culminated in the goal that Stoops sought.I might have been in middle school, so that goes to show how long ago it was (for Kentucky), said sophomore cornerback Chris Westry, who had one of the Wildcats two interceptions.Snnell carried 14 times for 152 yards to set a school single-season record for a freshman (1,006) and give Kentucky its first-ever 1,000-yard rushing duo with Williams (1,072).ddddddddddddKentel Williams 17-yard TD run and Gunnar Scholatos 25-yard interception return of Wright for a score got Austin Peay (0-11) ahead. The Governors couldnt stop Johnson or Kentucky after that and finished with their 27th straight loss dating back to 2014.THE TAKEAWAYAustin Peay: The Governors controlled the initial tempo and drove 69 yards for their first TD. But quarterback Javaughn Craig threw two interceptions and they didnt cross midfield until the fourth quarter and were outgained 410-284.The interception in the red zone, we cant have happen, coach Will Healy said. We still find ways to shoot ourselves in the foot with turnovers, but I though we went toe-to-toe.Kentucky: Interceptions by Westry and Mike Edwards -- the second of which led to the Wildcats first TD -- offset early holding penalties that erased touchdowns. But Johnsons entry made the biggest difference in settling down an offense that struggled without him. Johnson completed 5 of 9 passes for 101 yards. We just knew we had to settle down a little bit so we could do what we wanted to do as an offense, Johnson said. We just had to go out there and do it.HERE TO HELPKentuckys 1-2 punch of Snell and Williams were critical to its postseason push that pleased Snell more than breaking Moe Williams previous freshman rushing record of 928 yards in 1993.Im glad I got to 1,000 yards, Snell said, but Im happy won as a team, we got to six wins and get to go bowling. The seniors deserved that.UP NEXTAustin Peay: Season over.Kentucky: The Wildcats visit third-ranked (for now) Louisville (No. 5 CFP) , aiming to end a five-game losing streak against their in-state rival and hand the Cardinals their second consecutive loss.---More AP college football: collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
