VANCOUVER -- Three long years of hard work finally paid off for Russell Teibert on Saturday. Teiberts first two MLS career goals lifted the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday. The goals came after he subbed on for injured midfielder Daigo Kobayashi early in the first half. Teibert, a 20-year-old from Niagara Falls, Ont., is in his third season with the Whitecaps, but he had not managed to score while playing sparingly most of the time. "It feels great," said Teibert. "I was overwhelmed to score the first goal and then the second one came, and the feeling was extraordinary." The Whitecaps (3-4-3) ended a seven-game winless streak and beat the Galaxy for the first time. "Beating L.A. is something we wanted to do for our fans and for this club," said Teibert. "We have a big week coming up, and this could be a turning point for our season." The Galaxy (4-3-2) were unbeaten in five previous regular-season meetings and also eliminated the Whitecaps in the opening round of the playoffs en route to a second consecutive MLS championship in 2012. Caps coach Martin Rennie said his crew achieved an important goal by beating L.A. "A win like today gives an extra belief and a spring to everybodys step," said Rennie. "We think it was a real significant win for us." The Whitecaps also remained unbeaten at home in five games (3-0-2) this season. Darren Mattocks also scored for the Whitecaps, while Gyasi Zardes replied for L.A. Teibert, who has come up through Vancouvers youth program, started the Whitecaps first-ever MLS game, but has played in only 20 MLS games. Saturday marked his fifth league game this season, surpassing the four in which he saw action in 2012. He made personal history with his parents looking on from the stands. "Its huge," he said of playing in front of his mom and dad. "They supported my dream to become a professional athlete, a professional soccer player, so it was a little gift for him." His performance was also a treat for his teammates. He helped the Whitecaps rally from an embarrassing 2-0 road loss to Real Salt Lake a week earlier. After the setback, Rennie blasted the team in a rare outburst, and midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker, who has been serving as the teams interim captain in recent weeks, called the club "soft." "Im very happy for him," said Reo-Coker, who assisted on Teiberts first goal. "Im very happy that he finally (scored.) I see how hard he works. Ive seen how hard hes worked since Ive been here. ... Its a big achievement. He didnt start today." All of the scoring came in the second half after scoring chances were few and far between in the first half. Teiberts second goal on 76 minutes proved to be the winner as it gave Vancouver a 2-0 lead. He sent a through ball to the corner of the L.A. box where Gershon Koffie promptly passed it back to him for a left-footed strike. After Teibert scored, teammate Jun Marques Davidson jokingly neatened the Canadians Mohawk to make sure all hairs were pointing upward. Teibert opened the scoring for the Whitecaps in the 63rd minute as he took a pass from Reo-Coker near the right corner of the L.A. box, cut back towards the middle and fired in a left-footed shot. "I was always looking to shoot there," said Teibert. "I was coming in on my left foot and I have confidence in my left foot. So whenever I get that chance, I want to shoot it." After netting his first MLS goal, Teibert pumped his fist in the air and ran to the Whitecaps bench and hugged teammates. After Teiberts second goal increased Vancouvers lead, Zardes cut the Galaxys deficit in half in the 86th minute as he headed in a Villarreal cross from the right flank. But Mattocks secured the win in stoppage time as second-half substitute Jordan Harvey chested the ball to him near the goal-line and he jammed it past L.A. goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini, who had a strong game while making six saves. Mattocks, who led the team in scoring last season and had several near-misses lately including one in the first half when Cudincini stopped his header, ended a six-game goal drought. "Obviously, its the first one in a while ... so thats a big relief," said Mattocks. Galaxy coach Bruce Arena chastised his players for losing concentration on the Jamaicans goal. "Thats ridiculous. We should not give up a goal there," said Arena. "Thats poor play by a bunch of our players." Teibert entered the game after Kobayashi left in the 14th minute with an ankle injury suffered about three minutes earlier. L.A. midfielder Mike Magee said Teiberts insertion changed the course of the game, and the star-studded Galaxy could not counter with a similar effort from one of its players. "There were a couple other plays he was pretty dangerous on as well," said Magee. "So, thats the perfect example of what we didnt have. Im not saying a sub coming on, but just a guy who can just kind of take the game. (He) went at players and made dangerous plays happen. Myself and the rest of us didnt do that." The Whitecaps hope the victory will help them raise their level of play as they head east for the first leg of the Amway Canadian Champions final against the Montreal Impact on Wednesday and then return home for a league game against the Portland Timbers next weekend. "Now, we have to use (the win over L.A.) as momentum to be a season-changer for us and try to grow as a team -- and try and achieve what we want to achieve this year," said Reo-Coker. Notes: Rennie said Kobayashi "went over on his ankle," but the injury doesnt seem very serious. ... Vancouver lost Camilo late in the second half to a thigh injury. A team spokesman said a muscle seized up, but Camilo was fine. Camilos departure resulted in Harvey subbing on to set up the insurance goal. ... Honduran international central defender Johnny Leveron started his first home game for the Whitecaps. He received a yellow card for a tackle on which he twisted Jose Villarreals legs in the third minute. ... Contrary to expectations, L.A. striker Robbie Keane and Todd Dunivant, who are recuperating from injuries, did not dress. Custom Pelicans T-shirts . BOSTON -- The New York Yankees were three outs away from becoming legitimate challengers for the American League East title before it all went wrong Thursday.New York, holding a three-run lead after eight innings in the opener of a three-game series against the first-place Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, was on the verge of pulling within three games in the division. However, Boston rallied for five runs, capped by Hanley Ramirezs three-run, walk-off homer, and pulled out a 7-5 victory. The result left the Yankees (77-69) five games behind the Red Sox (82-64) in the division, three games out of the second AL wild-card spot and licking their wounds heading into the Friday game at Fenway. This one hurts, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. We gotta bounce back tomorrow. We were in a pretty good position going into the ninth inning, and we werent able to close the deal. The Yankees attempt to bounce back Friday when they face Boston right-hander Clay Buchholz, who not long ago found himself in the bullpen amid speculation the Red Sox might actually release him. Now, the veteran right-hander is back in the rotation, and squarely in the division and wild-card chases as the schedule hits the home stretch.Buchholz (6-10, 5.31 ERA), shelled in his last start at Toronto, faces Yankees rookie Luis Cessa (4-1, 4.34).Buchholz is 2-0 with a 3.68 ERA over his past four starts. However, the outing against the Blue Jays was over after three innings -- six runs, four hits, including a Troy Tulowitzki grand slam, and four walks. The Red Sox slugged their way back into the contest and won the rubber game of the three-game series, 11-8.Their plan that they had today was to go out and make me pitch to them, Buchholz said after that game. You know, obviously with the walks, they cashed all those in. On the flip side of that, it shows kind of character we have oon this team coming back, being up, being down.ddddddddddddThe start before that, Buchholz allowed one run on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings at San Diego, beating the Padres 5-1.He is only 5-9 with a 6.19 ERA lifetime against the Yankees, yielding 19 home runs in 88 2/3 innings. The current Yankees dont have great numbers against Buchholz. Mark Teixeira is 4-for-28 (with two homers), Jacoby Ellsbury 2-for-10, newly signed Billy Butler 4-for-18. However, Didi Gregorius is 2-for-4 and Chase Headley and Brian McCann both 3-for-8.Buchholz has pitched just once against the Yankees this season, a brief relief appearance Aug. 10 in which he induced a double-play grounder from the lone batter he faced.Cessa has never faced the Red Sox and will make his sixth major league start. Last month, he became the second Yankees pitcher to throw quality starts in each his first three major league starts (Masahiro Tanaka was the other, and he ran his career-opening streak to an American League-record 16 straight).Cessa is 2-1 with a 2.79 ERA as a starter, but he is coming off his first career loss. On Sunday against the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium, Cessa gave up four runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. However, three of the hits were home runs.Obviously, you know when you play at this level, you cant miss your spots because when you do, they usually hit them out, Cessa said after the game. So you got to be better at that, hitting your location.Cessa didnt walk anyone and has yet to walk more than two batters in a game.Looking toward bouncing back in his first Fenway start, he said, Every start is important to me. Every time I go out there, I want to give the best I have, and right now, I just got to focus on the next one. ' ' '
