VIENNA -- World Cup giant slalom champion Eva-Maria Brem was ruled out for the rest of the season after breaking her lower left leg in a training crash on Friday.The Austrian skier was to undergo surgery in a clinic in Innsbruck later Friday, and was expected to need between four and six months before getting back on skis. Brem will miss the Alpine skiing world championships in February.Both shin and fibula are broken, Austrian team doctor Christian Hoser said. Surgery is required to stabilize the ankle with a nail and enable the healing.The Austrian ski federation said Brem straddled a gate before crashing at Pass Thurn, Austria, during training for the World Cup slalom in Levi, Finland, next week.The 28-year-old Brem, who has been voted the 2016 sportswoman of the year in Austria, won two giant slaloms last year to take the GS season title.
