ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. -- For more than a decade, owner Martin Schwartz has been buying French fillies to win Grade 1 turf races in America. The bloodstock agent Michel Zerolo finds them, Schwartz buys them, and the fillies cross the Atlantic to try to adapt and improve in a whole new racing system. Its no sure thing, this transition. How does it work so often for Schwartz?I have the right trainer, he said. That trainer is Chad Brown, and for the fourth time, Schwartz had the right horse for the Grade 1, $700,000 Beverly D., which he won Saturday with Sea Calisi. The victory was an emotional one for Schwartz. As Sea Calisi neared the winners circle, he pumped his fist in the air and yelled, Yeah! Thats four!Brown trails Schwartz by one in Beverly D. victories but has won the race two years in a row, taking the 2015 edition with Watsdachances. Brown and Schwartz teamed for the first time in the race with Stacelita in 2011, and Schwartz won his first two, with Gorella and Angara, before he had horses with Brown.Aboard Sea Calisi was Florent Geroux, who won the Beverly D. for the first time but seemed to win almost all the races on the Saturday card here. He won five in all, four graded stakes, two of them Grade 1s.I had a good trip, Geroux said. The pacemaker really helped her today. I was able to get over and save ground before the first turn, which was very important.Schwartz and Brown were leaving no stone unturned in the Beverly D. Sea Calisi looked like a Grade 1 horse, but she had never won such a race before Saturday, and in the Grade 2 New York last time, shed raced in a thicket of horseflesh through the homestretch and wound up a tough-luck second. That race was at 1-1/4 miles, and the Beverly D. is at 1-3/16, and Sea Calisi probably is more naturally a 1-1/2-mile horse, and so her connections entered a pacemaker, Elusive Million, who, after a slow start, was urged to the lead by jockey Julio Felix and carved out a fast pace for the distance, 23.71 and 47.68 seconds. That served to spread the field and gave Sea Calisi both more room to operate and a better pace dynamic for her stretch kick.We thought because it was a touch short for her, she needed an honest pace, and the plan came together, said Brown.Eleventh in the early and middle stages, Sea Calisi raced in the clear and near the fence at the half-mile pole before Geroux guided her outside on the far turn. He sat on the best horse in the race, had gotten the right setup, and only needed to decide when to pull the trigger. That moment came at the top of the stretch, where Sea Calisi surged mightily, passing most of the field before the stretch call, then moving to the lead in the final furlong.Als Gal, a 20-1 shot, put in a strong bid on the far outside, gaining on the winner over the final furlong before falling a half-length short. We just needed a few more feet, I guess, said trainer Mike Maker.Zipessa, who pressed the quick pace set by the rabbit and took the lead before the far turn, held on very well for third, 1-1/4 lengths behind Als Gal.Having the rabbit in there couldnt have helped, but she ran really well today, said trainer Mike Stidham.Tuttipaesi finished fourth, and Faufiler was fifth, while the two Aidan OBrien-trained 3-year-olds made no impression, with second choice Coolmore 10th and third choice Ballydoyle 12th.Sea Calisi, who was 2-5 early in the betting, paid $4.20 as the heavy favorite and was timed in 1:54.93 for 1-3/16 miles over firm turf.Florent kept her out of trouble and did what he was supposed to do, and she did what she was supposed to do, said Brown. Shes a really, really nice filly and should be undefeated over here stateside with some trouble last time. The 4-year-old Sea Calisi is by the Irish horse Youmzain and out of a German family, her dam a daughter of the stallion Surumu. She had a good overseas record, winning twice in seven starts, and was a Group 2 winner with a third-place finish in the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks. Sea Calisi won the Sheepshead Bay in her U.S. debut before her tough loss in the New York. Brown said she was likely to make her next start in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl at Belmont.Schwartz had been stewing on the tough New York beat for weeks now, and he felt the pressure of starting a heavy favorite Saturday. Its very difficult to see your horse at a price like that, to be odds-on from the 13 hole, he said. You worry about traffic problems, and youre in the parking lot to start. Its just so much relief, I cant begin to tell you.Its surprising Schwartz had any concern at all. Things always seem to break his way in the Beverly D. Ray Rice Jersey . The Americans, skipped by John Shuster, seized the advantage in the eighth end by scoring five points for a 7-3 lead. The Czechs pulled two back in the ninth, but Shusters team of third Jeff Isaacson, second Jared Zezel and lead John Landsteiner ended with another point to secure the last Olympic berth on offer. Custom Marquise Brown Jersey . Fellow centre Pavel Datsyuk remains out because of a concussion. Zetterberg has 11 goals and 19 assists for a team-high 30 points, and Datsyuk has a team-high 12 goals and 11 assists. http://www.customravensjersey.com/ . -- There were so many positives from the Orlando Magics first victory of the season that it was hard for coach Jacque Vaughn to stop praising his players. Brynden Trawick Jersey . But what about the officials? Every sport has officials and they also have stories about hard work and sacrifice but their accomplishments are seldom recognized by anyone outside their inner circle. Kyle Boller Jersey .com) - The Pittsburgh Penguins placed forward James Neal on injured reserve Tuesday. Hes cut! The Russian is cut! Carson Wentz finally threw an interception, and the Eagles finally lost! Hes not a machine -- hes a man!Yeah, Rocky Balboa might be the most tired Philadelphia sports cliché, but until Darius Slay ripped his final pass of the day out of the air Sunday afternoon, Wentz was looking straight Ivan Drago. (From an unstoppability standpoint, of course. Not from a menacing, steroid-addled, deadly Red Scare one.)You could say we learned Sunday that Wentz isnt going to go his entire career without making a mistake or losing a game, but Id like to think we already knew that. Fans get too excited, and skeptics get too nasty. But if I can change ... and you can change ... everybody can change!Or, at least, we can take a look at what we think Week 5 of the NFL season taught us.The Dallas Cowboys might be able to pull this offNo pass rush? Bah. With DeMarcus Lawrence back, Dallas had four sacks in Sundays victory over the Bengals. The division-rival Giants have four sacks all season. The Cowboys defense doesnt need to be great -- just OK -- because the offense flat-out works. Ezekiel Elliott is running through holes big enough to be designated national parks. Dak Prescott is doing everything the Cowboys are?asking him to do. I continue to think they should give the job back to Tony Romo when hes healthy, but Im starting to waver. My rationale is theyll be able to use a lot more of the playbook with Romo than theyre using with Prescott. But I waver because, having watched them the past four weeks, I wonder whether they need to.Jack Del Rio is going to be huge in VegasRemember when Del Rios Raiders were down seven and scored a touchdown in the waning seconds of Week 1s game in New Orleans, and he went for two and got it? Sure, you do. You dont forget a thing like that. But that wasnt a one-off. Del Rio had a fourth-and-3 on the Chargers 21 down three points in the second half Sunday, and he dialed up a touchdown pass from Derek Carr to Michael Crabtree. Then he went for two because thats what Jack Del Rio does. Sure, opposing teams are just taking turns ripping out the Chargers hearts these days. But cant you see a future in which the well-coiffed coach of the Las Vegas Raiders is at some high-rollers table at Caesars, hitting on 16 with the dealer showing 4, and the whole table is like, What are you do ... YES!!The Giants are asking a lot of a small group of playersSundays game was the first all season in which Jason Pierre-Paul played fewer?than 95 percent of the Giants defensive snaps. On the season, he has played 96 percent, and fellow starting defensive end Olivier Vernon has played 93 percent. They are great players and well-paid for their efforts, but a defensive line is at its best when it has enough pieces to rotate in and out and keep its stars fresh for the fourth quarter. The Giants couldnt get near Aaron Rodgers in the second half Sunday, and it cost them, as Green Bay held the ball for 36:38 of the game.dddddddddddd Janoris Jenkins is playing great, and Odell Beckham Jr. will be just fine. But not enough Giants are performing at a high level, and the team is asking too much of the few who are.The Colts cannot expect Andrew Luck to endure thisHow did those contract negotiations go, by the way? Andrew, yeah, well give you whatever you want, but youre going to have to be OK?with spending the season on your back. Luck was sacked five times in Sundays win over the Bears, and he has been sacked 20 times this season. If he plays all 16 games, itll be a miracle. The Colts need to figure out a way to protect their franchise player, or their franchise isnt going to accomplish very much during his career. The 49ers will start at least two quarterbacks -- probably three -- before the end of the seasonIm serious, people. Christian Ponder will start a game before this season ends. You heard it here first. Or maybe you didnt, but still. Heck, I wouldnt be surprised if Ponder started this week. I also wouldnt be surprised if the 49ers went to Colin Kaepernick or if they stayed with Blaine Gabbert. Chip Kelly knows the stew hes cooking tastes terrible, but all three bottles in the spice rack are filled with dust. You can yell yourself hoarse that Kaepernick couldnt possibly be worse, but the fact is he could, and the Niners dont have a good answer for all that ails them. The Steelers could run away with the leagues best divisionPittsburgh looked terrible in Philly but has looked unstoppable everywhere else. The Ravens are turning back into a pumpkin. And it appears the Marquis de Sade made the Bengals first-half schedule. (Honestly, next week is their fourth road game, and its in New England!) Theres no reason the Steelers shouldnt be able to run away and hide, even from the other good teams in the division.Miami Hurricanes never dieAndre Johnson, who entered the NFL in 2003, scored a touchdown for the Titans on Sunday. Frank Gore, who entered the NFL in 2005, ran for 75 yards and passed JIM BROWN on the all-time rushing yards list. Weve heard a lot about how great those Hurricanes teams were back then, but the fact that these guys are still delivering at their age just underlines it.Joey Bosa played! And he had two sacks in his debut! Good to see you, big guy! I mean, its probably too late after the holdout and the injury and the three blown fourth-quarter leads while you were out, but the Chargers sure are happy to have their first-round pick in uniform and looking good. San Diego hasnt had much go its way so far this season, and losing top defensive back Jason Verrett last week was the latest kick in the gut. Maybe Bosas arrival gives them a kick somewhere more helpful. ' ' '
