OXNARD, Calif. -- Dallas Cowboys backup quarterback Kellen Moore suffered a broken right leg in Tuesdays practice, which puts even more stress on a position many believed needed help behind Tony Romo already. On what was scheduled to be Moores second-to-last team snap of practice Tuesday, guard Jared Smith was pushed back by defensive lineman Lawrence Okoye and stepped on Moores right ankle as the QB was making a throw to the sideline. Moore remained on the ground for a bit before he was able to limp off. He was helped to a trainers table and later carted to the locker room with an immobilization splint on his right leg. After practice, owner and general manager Jerry Jones said the initial diagnosis was a broken leg, and Moore would get X-rays at a local hospital. Jones was unsure whether Moore would require surgery and how much time he would miss.A source said Moore suffered a broken right fibula and will need surgery. He is looking at a two- to three-month recovery, depending on surgery findings, according to a source. Its regrettable, and well basically just take a look at it and address it there, Jones said. I dont have any comments about what, if anything, well be doing there. With Romos recent injury history, the backup position is ultra-important to the Cowboys. Romo, who turned 36 in April, missed 12 games last season because of a twice-broken left collarbone. He had two back surgeries in 2013. The Cowboys went 1-11 with Brandon Weeden, Matt Cassel and Moore starting games in Romos absence to finish 4-12 last season, their worst finish since a 1-15 mark in 1989.The Cowboys have backed Moore as Romos backup throughout the offseason. He played in three games last season, started the final two and finished with four touchdown passes and six interceptions. In the season-ending loss to the Washington Redskins, he completed 33 of 48 passes for 435 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. In free agency, the Cowboys did not go after high-priced backups such as Chase Daniel and Colt McCoy, but they met with veteran Matt Moore, who opted to remain with the Miami Dolphins. Last week, Jones said veteran Nick Foles was not an option, mostly because the Cowboys have four quarterbacks on the roster. With Moores injury, that could change.Rookie Dak Prescott took the second-team snaps after Moores injury. The Cowboys selected Prescott in the fourth round of the draft. He was the first quarterback drafted by the Cowboys since 2009.Its an opportunity for me to take more reps, get more snaps, and its something Im going to come in and make sure Im ready for, Prescott said. Im going to go study this film and continue to study it ... and take everything from the film room what Ive learned and take it to the field.Undrafted free agent Jameill Showers is in his second year and has been sharing the third-team work with Prescott.Moore had waited five years to be in a position to be the No. 2 quarterback after a record-setting career at Boise State. He spent four seasons with the Detroit Lions after making the team as an undrafted free agent but did not play in a game. It was his connection with Scott Linehan there that led him to the Cowboys last summer, first on the practice squad and then on the active roster. He spoke over the weekend about the excitement of the opportunity, but now he has to deal with a broken leg.Your heart hurts for him because he just works really hard, tight end Jason Witten said. Hes constantly taking notes. Hes studying. Hes communicating. And at that position -- Ive seen it with Tony for a long time as we came in -- you never know when your [opportunity] is going to happen. Hell continue to fight. Thats what he is. Thats who hes been his whole life. Hell bounce back, Im sure.Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. Air Jordan 28 Sale . There is a certain scenario in play, which begins in Saturdays $1 million Cotillion Stakes at Parx Racing, that few racing people in America could have envisioned at any point this year. And it involves Songbird, and the 3-year-old filly championship this year that just about everyone thought was automatically hers.It still might be. But lets continue. Its ridiculous how dominant Songbird has been over her generation since her career debut in July of last year. She won all four of her starts at 2, including three Grade 1 events, by margins of 6 ?, 5 ?, 4 ?, and 5 ? lengths, and was never close to being tested. Only one crackpot of the 261 Eclipse Award voters who cast their ballots in the 2015 2-year-old filly category prevented Songbird from being a unanimous champion.Songbirds 3-year-old campaign has been a near mirror image of her juvenile season. She has won all six of her starts, including three Grade 1s, by the lopsided margins of 6 ?, 3 ?, 3 ?, 6 ?, 5 ?, and 7 lengths. Songbird is, in a word, brilliant. However, there are those who think Songbird might be vulnerable Saturday. Putting aside for a moment that opposing Songbird, whether on the track or at the windows, has been a fools errand, and expecting a different outcome this time would be one definition of insanity for some, the reasons for seeing possible vulnerability in Songbird Saturday are not entirely without merit.Songbird won the Coaching Club American Oaks and Alabama Stakes in her last two starts in resounding fashion, but they were not the easy victories her big win margins would suggest. She was hard ridden in both races for the first time in her life, and ran hard both times, and did so over a Saratoga main track that is a little bit deeper than the surfaces she is accustomed to at her home base of Southern California. Moreover, Songbird traveled back to SoCal from upstate New York after the Alabama, and has now made another trip east -- all shipping done in the heat of summer -- and will encounter a main track at Parx that is often much deeper than anything she has ever seen, although management will likely tighten up the track for its big day Saturday. One other thing Songbird will encounter in the Cotillion is an opponent in Cathryn Sophia who might be the most formidable she has yet faced.Cathryn Sophia won the first four starts of her career Songbird-style, which is to say, most impreessively.dddddddddddd. Cathryn Sophia then was the victim of a shocking upset in the Ashland Stakes, but rebounded forcefully with a strong victory in the Kentucky Oaks, a race Cathryn Sophia was re-routed to when Songbird took ill and was unable to compete. One more surprising loss occurred in the subsequent Acorn Stakes, but Cathryn Sophia indicated she is back in peak form with a dominant score in a prep for the Cotillion at Parx three weeks ago.Okay, with that backstory, here is the scenario that has Songbird not winning another divisional title this year. And its not really tin foil hat stuff:Songbirds demanding efforts at Saratoga and the cross-country travel do indeed extract a toll, she comes up a little flat in the Cotillion, and Cathryn Sophia beats her, and beats her by daylight.Next comes the Breeders Cup. Say Cathryn Sophia runs in the BC Distaff, and wins it, beating top older opponents Beholder and Stellar Wind, as well as Songbird. That would make Cathryn Sophia 2 for 2 in head to head meetings with Songbird, give her a critical win over elders in a huge spot, and she would also have that win in the Kentucky Oaks, the most prestigious race for 3-year-old fillies on the continent.Bottom line is if this scenario plays out this way -- a HUGE if, I know -- Cathryn Sophia would simply be the better choice for 3-year-old filly champion.Consider a few alternate scenarios:Say Cathryn Sophia wins the Cotillion, runs well in the Distaff, doesnt win, but does hit the board ahead of Songbird. That would be a tougher call, but Cathryn Sophias argument for a title over Songbird would still be a very good one based on head-to-head meetings alone. How about this: Cathryn Sophia wins the Cotillion, opts to run in the Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Sprint instead of the Distaff, wins that over her elders, and Songbird loses again in the Distaff. Thats a tougher call, but Cathryn Sophias Eclipse Award candidacy against Songbirds would still have to be carefully considered. What happens if Cathryn Sophia beats Songbird Saturday, and for whatever reason, Songbird doesnt run in the Breeders Cup?Clearly, there are numerous possible permutations here. But it all begins with the Cotillion, a race Songbird might need to win more than you realize. ' ' '
