NEW ORLEANS -- The two Louisiana co-defendants in the drug and rape case that brought down one-time NFL star Darren Sharper were set for formal sentencing Thursday in federal court in New Orleans.Erik Nunez, a former restaurant worker, and Brandon Licciardi (lih-CHAR-dee), a former suburban sheriffs deputy, pleaded guilty to state and federal charges earlier this year. The case arose from revelations that Sharper drugged and raped women in four states.Sharper was sentenced to 18 years in federal prison after pleading guilty.Like Sharper, Licciardi and Nunez pleaded guilty to state and federal charges in the case. Their plea agreements with state and federal prosecutors call for Licciardi to serve 17 years; with Nunez serving 10 years. Both men face formal sentencing in state court next week.During a 14-year NFL career, Sharper played in two Super Bowls, one with the Packers as a rookie and one with New Orleans Saints when they won in 2010. He retired in 2011 and was working as a broadcast NFL analyst when allegations that he drugged and raped women began to surface.Under a deal that was expected to net him about nine years in prison, Sharper pleaded guilty or no-contest in state and federal courts to charges that he drugged and sexually assaulted women in Arizona, California, Nevada and Louisiana -- all part of a multistate global plea deal announced in early 2015.But U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo, saying there were as many as 16 victims in the four states, rejected the sentence as too light. That led to his 18-year federal sentence, followed by a 20-year state sentence that attorneys said was essentially the same given state and federal sentencing practices and credit for time served.Louisiana is the only state in which Sharper had co-defendants. John Worsfold has queried the AFL match review panels decision to suspend David Zaharakis but stopped short of criticising it.The Essendon coach was the big loser from the sanctions dished out from round 15, losing Zaharakis and ruckman Mark Jamar for this weekends match with St Kilda.Zaharakis was issued with a one-week ban for a gut punch to West Coast opponent Jackson Nelson, while Jamar received a similar punishment for striking Jeremy McGovern.Worsfold suggested the in-form midfielder was desperately unlucky to be the one plucked out for suspension for a relatively common act.Theres maybe been 16 or 18 of them this year. Hes not on his own, he said. You go on track record and you see some that were so similar that have been fined.Theyve penalised him so now another 16 will go unpenalised or fined?Theyve assessed his as a bit more serious as the others so hes got to wear that.Worsfold said the two-week ban, reduced to one week with a guilty plea, wouldnt be worth argument at the tribunal. When you get one that they say is a little bit more severe than others its frustrating because its too risky to challenge it, he said. Two weeks for that would seem well and truly over the top.The Bommbers were also nonplussed by a decision to penalise Courtenay Dempsey for a fourth-quarter tackle on Andrew Gaff.ddddddddddddDempsey met the already-airborne Gaff with force, slamming him into the ground.All-time record tackler Jude Bolton called his action perfect on Twitter but acting umpires chief Luke Ball said Dempseys accentuates the lift and then tips Gaff into a pretty vulnerable position.Worsfold disagreed and thought it looked a good tackle.I would debate it should have been a free kick, he said. All the players are aware you cant lift a player in the tackle. Our argument is he didnt lift him. Gaff had jumped in the air.We have to now be aware of where the line is ... that was a really grey one.In other penalties from the round, Port Adelaide trio Kane Mitchell, Jasper Pittard, Justin Westoff and Richmond leaders Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin were served with fines wrestling or melee fines from their Friday night meeting.Carlton utility Dale Thomas was also given a $1500 fine for engaging in rough conduct against Collingwood youngster James Aish.
