Overland Park, Kan. - Carly Kan of Missouri and Jazzmin Babers of Texas A&M are among the 30 NCAA? womens volleyball student-athletes who were selected as candidates for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award? in collegiate volleyball.An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School?, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.Kan, an outside hitter for the Tigers, is a finance major who was on both the 2014 and 2015 Fall SEC Academic Honor Roll. She also was named 2014 SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year and a 2014 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection. One of four seniors on the squad, Kan has completed numerous community service hours with her teammates throughout the year. One of the most popular community events involves running respective Youth Leagues at local Columbia elementary schools, where Kan and the Tigers teach the fundamentals of volleyball to kids grades K-5. Other community service events she has participated in over the past four years include Partner in Education, Early Childhood Academy Tiger Tuesdays, the Special Olympics, Adopt-A-Spot maintenance program, Columbia Twilight Festival and Elementary School Open Houses. Kan also has been heavily involved with Mizzou faculty and new student open houses, as well as volunteering at Mizzou Childrens Hospital, the Safe Kids Amazing Camp and Going Bonkers Night in Columbia. Kans competition honors for 2015 include AVCA All-Southeast Region, All-SEC Team and being a member on the USA Volleyball World University Games. In 2014, she was named an honorable mention AVCA All-American and earned a spot on the AVCA All-Southeast Region Team. As a freshman, Kan was named an honorable mention AVCA All-American, the AVCA Southeast Region Freshman of the Year, the SEC Freshman of the Year and was a part of the All-SEC Team. She recently became the fifth Tiger in program history to accumulate 1,000 career kills, digs and points. Her 491 kills in 2015 were seventh-most in single-season in program history, and she tied the school record for most double-doubles in a season (19) in 2014.Babers, a middle block for the Aggies, is majoring in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis in elementary education. She has been a member of the fall SEC Academic Honor Roll each of the last two years and has career ambitions to become an elementary school teacher upon her graduation in May 2017. Despite a history of five orthopedic knee and shoulder surgeries, the team captain has managed to start every match (103 as of Sept. 22) of her collegiate career. Babers engages in numerous philanthropic activities. A member of the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes leadership team, she is responsible for community outreach and also serves as a speaker, sharing testimonies at local schools and churches. In May, Babers and several teammates went on a mission trip to Haiti to spread the gospel and do manual labor. She has been involved in numerous volunteer activities during her career at Texas A&M, including spending time at the Bryan Adult Learning Center, where she volunteered in an adult ESL class, taught lessons and helped with one-on-one work. A nationally decorated middle blocker, Babers has led Texas A&M to the NCAA Tournament ever year of her career, and in 2015 she helped the Aggies win the SEC Championship, the first conference title in program history. Last season, she became the eighth player in Texas A&M history to be selected to an AVCA All-America Team, garnering second-team honors after hitting a school season-record .412, smashing the previous record of .400, which had stood since 1984. Babers was named AVCA Honorable Mention All-America as a sophomore, and she earned AVCA All-South Region Honorable Mention as a freshman.The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
