SEATTLE - Nick Franklin has been in the major leagues for less than a month but hes already starting to become one of the Seattle Mariners most-trusted hitters in crucial situations. Franklin delivered a two-run single off Oakland reliever Ryan Cook in the eighth inning to lift the Mariners to a 7-5 win over the As on Saturday night. After a three-run home run from Raul Ibanez tied the game at 5-5 in the seventh inning, Brendan Ryan led off the eighth with a single off Cook (1-1) and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Endy Chavez reached with a bunt single to put runners at the corners and took second on indifference. Franklin then came through with the single to left field to score Ryan and Chavez to give the Mariners the lead. His three hits and three RBI matched career-highs and it was the first game-winning hit of his career. "He likes being up in those situations," manager Eric Wedge said. "I just like the way he plays so aggressively. He does it offensively. He does it defensively. He does it on the basepaths. I just think youre a better baseball player when you play with no fear and thats what weve seen from him so far." Yoervis Medina (2-2) worked 2 1-3 innings scoreless to close out the game. With the three hits against Oakland, Franklins average is up to .295 with seven doubles, four home runs and 13 RBI in 25 games. His ability to hit in critical spots is something his teammates are already noticing as well. "For him to be able to stay calm in those situations and for him to be able to stay disciplined like that is huge," Ibanez said. "Hes a really heads-up player. He plays very, very mature. "Hes been very impressive." Franklin said he just tries to stay relaxed and not allow the pressure of the moment to get to him. "Im just trying to put something in play, give ourselves a chance to score anything," Franklin said. "Its better to put the ball in play than to have a swing and a miss trying to hit a long ball." In his first game back from the disabled list, Franklin Gutierrez homered to right-centre field in his first at-bat to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead. Following walks by Justin Smoak and Henry Blanco, Franklin came through with a two-out single to score Smoak and extend the lead to 2-0. Oakland got a run back in the third, on Eric Sogards sacrifice fly. The Mariners chased As starter Dan Straily from the game in the fourth inning. Straily lasted 3 1-3 innings — the shortest outing of his career — while allowing six hits and two runs. He walked three and struck out five. "He just didnt have a good release point today," As manager Bob Melvin said. "He was teetering from the beginning: it was what, six hits and three walks in just over three inning. He just had a rough start." Jed Lowries bases-loaded single scored a pair to give the As a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Oakland added on in the seventh inning. Lowrie doubled and the Mariners elected to intentionally walk Yoenis Cespedes. After a Brandon Moss struck out, Medina relieved and Josh Donaldson and Josh Reddick each singled in a run to give the As a 5-2 cushion. The lead didnt last long as Seattle rallied in bottom half of the inning. Ibanez delivered a three-run home run into the right field seats off Jerry Blevins to knot the game at 5-5. Aaron Harang went five innings allowing six hits and three runs for the Mariners. He walked two and struck out three. Notes: Gutierrez went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored in his first game since being activated from the 60-day disabled list. CLEVELAND -- Justin Mastersons teammates gave him one run of support. Clevelands ace, with a little help from the bullpen, made sure that was enough. Masterson took a shutout into the eighth inning and outdueled Texas Yu Darvish in the Indians 1-0 win on Saturday night. Michael Bourn homered to lead off the first inning for the games only run. Masterson (12-7), an American League All-Star, struck out eight and allowed five hits in 7 2-3 innings. He shut down the Rangers and beat Darvish (9-5), who struck out 11 and held the Indians to three hits in six innings. Masterson knew runs would be tough to come by. "I was thinking, OK lets keep going, maybe one an inning, that would be great," Masterson said. "I knew that probably wouldnt happen with Yu out there, the great pitcher that he is." Darvishs only mistake came on his second pitch when Bourn hit a line drive that barely cleared the wall in right field. The home run was hit in Bourns first career at-bat against the Texas ace. "I heard a lot about him," Bourn said. "I believe the hype." Chris Perez pitched the ninth for his 14th save. Masterson retired the first two hitters in the eighth but was pulled after Nelson Cruzs two-out single. Joe Smith retired Adrian Beltre on a line drive to left that was caught on the warning track. "Wow, that was impressive on both sides," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "Thats a tough game to win." While not as pleased with the outcome, Rangers manager Ron Washington praised both pitchers. "Yu was outstanding," he said. "After that second pitch to Bourn, they couldnt hit him. But we couldnt hit Masterson, either." The Rangers have lost 11 of 14 and are 2-7 since the All-Star break. Masterson had struggled against the Rangers before Saturday, going 0-4 with a 7.54 ERA in eight career appearances. He retired nine straight batters before Cruzs single and was given a standing ovation by the 24,242 fans as he walked to the dugout. "You want to stay in there, but I trust Tito (Francona) when he comes out there," said Masterson, who threw 113 pitches. Masterson, who worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth by retiring Cruz on a ground ball, has been the winning pitcher in three 1-0 games this season. The other two were complete game performances against the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees. "The great thing about the 1-0 games is they go quick," he said. "Everyones pretty happy about that. Its just nice. You feel like youre getting out there. Sometimes that helps keep that rhythm you have." This oone took 2 hours, 37 minutes to complete.dddddddddddd "Sometimes you have to win games like that," Francona said. "Thats what the leader of your staff does." Masterson has allowed one earned run in 14 2-3 innings in two starts since the All-Star break. He took a no-hitter into the seventh on Sunday against Minnesota. Darvish leads the majors with 172 strikeouts and has reached double figures seven times this season. Darvish, who threw 123 pitches, has failed to last seven innings in six straight starts. He has lost both starts to Cleveland this season. Bourn took an aggressive approach after taking Darvishs first pitch for a ball. "I didnt want him to get ahead too deep into the count," Bourn said. "I know how tough he is." Darvish took control after Bourns homer, striking out the side in the second and fanning two batters in the third, fourth and fifth. Cabrera reached third with two outs in the fourth, but Jason Giambi struck out. Jason Kipnis bid for a leadoff homer in the sixth fell a couple of feet short as Cruz made the catch in front of the right field wall. Michael Brantley doubled and Carlos Santana walked with two outs. Brantley stole third, and Santana stole second during Giambis at-bat. The inning ended when Leonys Martin ran down Giambis drive in left-centre. Elvis Andrus singled in the second inning and has had a hit in all 36 career games against Cleveland. After scoring eight runs and rallying from a 7-1 deficit in Fridays loss, the Rangers offence returned to its lacklustre ways. Texas right-hander Tanner Scheppers, who was assaulted while walking on a Cleveland street Thursday night, didnt pitch for the second straight game.
